High in the Andean foothills at Mirador Barlovento above Pradera in Valle del Cauca, Colombia, I captured this male White-necked Jacobin (Florisuga mellivora) in dynamic mid-flight during golden late-afternoon light.
Shooting in Program mode on the Canon R5 with the RF 100-500mm lens at 500mm, I set ISO 800 and let the camera automatically select 1/250 second at f/6.7 from a respectful 4 meters distance. This combination gave me sharp detail on the head and bill while nicely blurring the wings to convey motion and power against the soft forest bokeh.
The R5 and RF 100-500mm continue to be an outstanding setup for ethical wildlife photography in challenging field conditions.
