Canon R5c Fan rattle

xtrememarco

Hello everyone.

I recently got a Canon R5c and I love it so far 😉

Except that you can hear the fan in the recordings in a quiet environment. Fan settings are on "automatic" and "low". When recording starts, the fan stops. However, you can still hear a rattling noise. As if the fan constantly wants to start. Do you have that too?

Do you think this can still be fixed via a firmware update? Or where can you contact Canon for this?

Thank you very much.

Greetings xtrememarco,

The rattling sound that you may be hearing is the auto focusing system of the lens which is a slight and soft click here and there. This occurs when the camera is focusing and tracking a moving subject where it needs to have the focusing motor make the necessary adjustments on the lens. To test this, set the camera to manual focus and record a sample video clip. If there is no sound coming from the camera, then this was the issue. Unfortunately, there isn't a way to stop the camera from picking up this sound and the only recommendation we can provide is to use an external microphone that is placed farther away from the camera.

If the fan of the camera is rattling, then we recommend on sending the unit to our facility for service since it may be a hardware related issue with the fan assembly.

Greetings ,

Credit to NataliaP. for providing a helpful way to identify possible noises you may not be expecting during video recording.

For everyone's benefit, what lens or lenses are you using when you hear this?  Does it happen with just one lens or all?  Are these lenses adapted or native RF?  My camera does not make any rattling sounds. I usually run in "automatic" as well.  "Low" is good if the camera is being used in a warmer environment or if you know you're going to be filming for a considerable amount of time.  I recommend doing as NataliaP suggests and determine if your camera is operating normally.

If you do determine the camera requires service, it's important that you provide the steps to reproduce the behavior before sending it for inspection.  This will be helpful to ensure a problem if it exists is correctly addressed.

I hope this helps you figure it out.  Please let us know what you find.

Thank you very much for your answers. I'm embarrassed but it was really the autofocus of the lens.

I use the RF 24-70mm. As soon as I set the focus to manual the noise went away. Now I know what I have to do.

Thank you so much for your help.
