We installed the printer driver on Windows 10 x64 device, the printer works but when we start the scan software scan utility it keeps saying "A scanner driver supporting this software is not installed. Install it and try again." . We tried multiple time reinstall and reboot, but nothing works.

I have been reading a few posts referencing this far-too-common problem of the MF 743 machine not scanning. A client moved his MF743 to a new location, new network, etc. After the move, neither the printing nor scanning features worked. I soon remedied the printing issues. However, I cannot get the machine to scan. It is pretty clear what is going on -- the only source for a scanner driver appears to be the software on the Canon website, [Windows 64bit] MF743Cdw/MF741Cdw MFDrivers (Generic Plus UFR II / Generic FAX / ScanGear) from 2025. The printer & fax drivers install, but the scanner driver fails to install -- at least, that is what the software installer states is the issue. After running the installer software when I look in Device Manager the scanner is listed there and it apparently has a driver. I have installed the [Windows 32bit & 64bit] MF Scan Utility Ver.1.21.0.2, however, the scan utility tells me that the scanner is not installed, which is not terribly surprising since the MF 743 installer software told me the same thing.
The OS is Windows 10 Pro. The only antivirus software is the Windows one. I tried installing it once with the firewall completely turned off -- it made no difference. I have removed all of the instances of the scanner from the Device Manager, restarted the computer and attempted the installation again. Same results. Are there any workable solutions to this problem?

Greetings @phoenixvoice,
I have seen hundreds of these installations. Failures are not common. It happens occasionally and it's usually explainable. Typically related to something in the user's software environment.
There's a solution for this. It's not difficult. I don't have a Windows 10 VM handy so I'll provide the steps in a little bit.

Doing this from memory. I don't use windows 10 any longer.
Open device manager, expand the Imaging devices heading.
Select the first entry for the scanner. You may have more that one.
Right click and select update driver.
Then select Browse My Computer... then Let Me Pick....When the new window opens, ensure the show compatible hardware box is checked.
Select the first entry and click Next. The drivers should update. Once complete, close the dialog. Now right click on the scanner entry you just updated and select disable. << This is an important step. Then restart the system.
In the past, this enabled the scanner driver. Much has changed with windows 10 subsequently. If this doesn't work, try pointing the driver update to the install directory where the latest Canon drivers were installed.
Let me know if this helps.

Thank you for the quick response! I have access to this system remotely, so I will try these steps tomorrow morning and let you know what happens.

I followed the steps, and after reboot I enabled the scanner in Device Manager.
Unfortunately, there is no change
Please advise.

Greetings ,
Since you're not able to get the scanner driver to install., grab the Microsoft Install, uninstall, troubleshooting utility and run that against the system.
Fix problems that block programs from being installed or removed | Microsoft Support https://share.google/TLEkBoNBD7JfVbkfE
There's something in the customers environment that's keeping the program from installing.

I downloaded the microsoft troubleshooter. It checked the registry for possible problems, and found none. It me to specify the program name from a list of programs, but the Canon installer was not in the list, so I followed the troubleshooter's instructions and selected "not listed." Whereupon the troubleshooter announced that "Troubleshooting couldn't identify the problem."
Then I decided to install the driver manually from the installer package. I found the driver: ..\Downloads\MF741CMFDriverV6404WP\intdrv\SCAN\x64\Driver and installed it using the old process: from Control Panel -> Cameras and Scanners -> Add Device. It installed, but the entry in the Device Manager had a yellow triangle...the computer did not like the driver.
I uninstalled from device manager and attempted to run the MF741/743 installer package again. It had the same error, with the scanner now in Device Manager again but disabled. I "updated the driver," pointing it to the driver in the package that I referenced above. It installed the driver -- no yellow triangle this time -- but, still, same as before, testing the scanner from Control Panel -> Scanners and Cameras does not work...and when that test does not work for a scanner, the scanner is not going to work.
Since the Microsoft installer troubleshooter found nothing, and two different flavors of manual install of the driver from the package failed, I can't help but wonder whether the reason why the installer fails...is because the driver is not compatible.
