imageCLASS MF731Cdw Cannot use Canon Scanner on Windows 11

daveyp225

I have tried on three separate windows 11 machines. It is MF731CDW.

The printer cannot find my computer to scan too, and when using the MF utility,

I get the error

A scanner driver supporting this software is not installed. Install it and try again. 9,203,0.

I installed everything the same way I always do, and I have never had issues in the past. Complete driver package and then the scanner utility. Printing has always worked just fine.

Problems on Thinkpad, Surface pro 6 and my desktop computer. All the same thing.

Hello Daveyp225,

The error would point to an issue with the scanner driver installation on the computer. If the driver is not currently loaded, the MF scanner selector will not be ale to connect to the scanner over the network. In that situation, you would not be able to scan from the computer or from the operation panel.

You can try installing the [Windows 64bit] MF733Cdw/MF731Cdw MFDrivers (Generic Plus UFR II / Generic FAX / ScanGear) from our support site while any security software is turned off on the computer. Once installed, you can try opening the MF scan utility to see if you get the same error.

If you continue to have issues with scanner driver, I would suggest contacting support at 1-800-652-2666. Our agents would be happy to check what is blocking the install on the computer or what might be causing the driver issue.

I had he same issue connecting my scanner to my computer. I followed the link provided above and did not find any download versions for Windows 11.

There are no results for the OS Version you selected.

I would receive an error saying the following on Windows 11 (Windows 10 worked fine) when trying to scan from the printer itself using the Scan button:

"
ScanGear MF

Cannot communicate with the scanner. The cable may be disconnected, or the scanner may be turned off. Check the scanner status and try again. Scanner driver will be terminated.
"

The only solution that worked for me is the following:

  1. Make sure Windows Image Acquisition (WIA) in services.msc is running and set to Automatic (same for Win 10).
  2. Make sure the windows computer has a password set on the user account.
  3. Share the Desktop out making sure Change/Read is set to Allow (or setup a dedicated scans folder). Lock down using another user account if applicable.
  4. Go to Remote UI, Address Book, Create a Favorite on 01 by clicking "Not Registered", Type = File, Create a friendly Name, SMB, Host Name (Computer Name or IP Address), Folder Path (just the folder name only, not \\filepath or C:\scans. Example: Desktop), Put your windows username/password and OK
  5. Go back to Portal, Application Library, Name and Scan, Register and New Button, Edit, Create a friendly Button Name, Uncheck "Display Confirmation Screen Before Operation" if applicable, Destination = Select from Address Book and choose the location you did in Step 4.
  6. Reboot Printer by going back to Portal, Settings/Registration, Restart Device (top left), Execute.
  7. Test scanning and it should work.
  8. Troubleshooting: Try disabling Windows Firewall but mine was enabled and worked fine. Open Canon MF Network Scanner Selector and make sure your printer is selected. Make sure to install the MFDrivers (300MB) first, then MF Scan Utility. Open MF Scan Utility and make sure Scanner is showing properly in the top right. If you want to scan using the MF Scan Utility instead of directly to printer, make sure to go to Settings and make sure you have it set properly on where you want it to scan.

Hope this helps others. I'm coming from a Brother MFC-L8900CDW where the "One-Touch Shortcut" took me 30-seconds to setup. No issues with Brother, just wanted to try a different brand. This Canon took forever to figure out. What a miserable process. I never had to setup the Address Book or Application library if I went the "long" way to Scan on the LCD screen (Scan, Computer, select computer, Color, Scan). The Dev's should make it easier to do this process.

wow! is it seriously this complex? what you are stating is using a network sharing, not direct scan from the device.

I don't understand what your asking.

Looks like this has been resolved in KB5048667.  I'm downloading it now and will test.  No news from me is good news.

Still broken, I guess Canon needs to update their driver.

I called Canon and they had me download the file titled DR_RegistryFix.exe_download.xml.  I downloaded, unzipped, went to the directory and installed the file.  No more problems since.  It's under this link.  Select your operating system and go all the way to the bottom to find the DR registry fix.

Thank you! This also worked for me with my Color imageCLASS MF753Cdw device.
