PIXMA TR8620a // AirPrint unavailable

TCPGuru

Trying to sort an issue with a tr8620a and AirPrint being unavailable until the screen or a button is pressed.    Power savings modes have been disabled.  The printer remains on the network via WiFi however AirPrint is unavailable until someone actually touches the printer and it’s instantly available.

Am I missing a setting that can tweak this for an always on option?

Thank you!

I don't think there is any setting in the printer other than power options. Possibly AirPrint has a setting?

Greetings,

Airprint relies on Bonjour.

While many printers have power management options, there are no options to change the behavior of AirPrint itself.  It is completely reliant Bonjour and your networks ability to discover AirPrint capable devices.

Please tell us more about your network hardware, Brand and model of router, etc

Was this equipment issued by your ISP or something that you purchased. Are you using a mesh system in conjunction with the ISP equipment?  Please provide as much detail as possible.

One thing I would recommend is assigning a static IP to your printer on your network.  Also, I would install the printer as a TCP/IP device on your Mac.

I own serval apple products in addition to Windows.  I understand the convenience of AirPrint.  It's just not 100% reliable in some instances.  You also don't get the same level of functionality that you can get by installing the Canon drivers.  You can do it however you'd like. I'm just mentioning this so you get the most from your product.

Assigning a static IP to your printer is normally done in your router's admin portal.  Once you assign this IP, all you need to do is restart the printer using its power button.

To confirm the assignment is correct, open a web browser on your computer and enter the IP you've assigned, then press enter.  The printers web server should display.

Now open the printers and scanners applet from the Apple menu.  Use the minus key (-) to remove your printer.  Now add the printer as a TCP/IP device. Click on the globe which is just to the right of the printer icon at the top of the dialog.

The field below will ask for an IP or host name type in the IP address you've reserved for the printer.  Down below you'll see the same IP address in the printer name.  This field is editable, so give your printer a friendly name.

Leave the defaults pressing ok to add the printer.

Here's what you've done. You assigned the printer or static IP on your network and you've told your Mac to use that destination IP to find the printer.

To get the full functionality from your device, installing drivers for your operating system is recommended.  Visit the link below, select downloads, then the version and build of your Mac OS.

Run the driver(s). There may be more than one depending on the version of your OS.  Example one for printing one for scanning.

Once complete, return to the printers and scanners applet and view the printer properties.

Once open, look down near the bottom of the properties dialog and you'll see a driver's option with a drop-down menu.  Select the Canon printer driver that you've just installed.

Now close the dialog and test printing then scanning.  If you have any questions just ask.

This is an old screenshot of mine, but you can get the idea.  Click on the globe, enter the IP you have assigned.  Give the printer a friendly name, then select the Canon driver you have installed.  😉
