I use a Mac desktop with 10.11.6 (El Capitan) O.S. and have no problem printing wirelessly but when using laptop with same O.S. and on same network, I get either "printer not connected" or "software needs updating". Any ideas what I can try?

With the information provided, it appears that the driver may need to be updated. Although there is not a driver available for OS X El Capitan, the driver for Yosemite may provided the driver settings that you need. The following steps will assist you:
After successfully installing the printer driver, we are ready to adjust the printer in use. Please perform the following steps:
Now that the driver has been updated, open a document you would like to print and bring up the printer dialog box. Within the printer dialog box adjust the required settings and perform a test print.
