Dear ericmorgner,
Since your MP610 is not being detected when installing the Windows 8 drivers, I suggest trying a different USB port on the computer. If you have a newer computer that uses 3.0 USB ports, you would need to speak to Microsoft to have them adjust the port so it can work with the 2.0 USB cable.
Please note that the MP610 is not compatible with the Windows 10 operating system and downloading the Windows 8 drivers can't guarantee the driver will fully function whitin the Windows 10 enviroment.
If you wanted to consider it, you are eligible for the Canon Upgrade Program. This is for out of warranty units which have been diagnosed to require service or are incompatible with a new or upgraded system. This program allows you the opportunity to purchase a replacement product discounted from the list price. We will also include free ground shipping with your purchase.
If you would like to take advantage of this offer, please call our Sales Department at (866) 443-8002 seven days a week, 8 AM to midnight EST. Let them know you have been working with email technical support and that the Canon Upgrade Program was offered.
