shutter release not working S100

Hello,

I am suddenly having problems with my S100. It will not take the picture when I press the shutter release. In case I had accidentally changed something, I did a Reset to Defaults. Then it worked, briefly, before returning to not working. It also would not let me change My Colors.  Everything else seems to be working fine.  Any ideas?

I'm an at-home mom with no electronics repair experience. My s100 died with the shutter release failure during my recent vacation to Hawaii (directly after a tour of a rainforest = humidity). As all other folks here have felt, I was so upset and really rather brokenhearted over my defunct camera. I love this camera! I searched the internet, found this discussion, followed the instructions mentioned in this conversation. I ordered the screwdriver and Deoxit. The minute I turned back on the camera after the repair, it worked. Perfectly. I cried. No joke! Thank you for this amazing counsel and for your willingness to share your knowledge.

Hi amisella
Glad you got a reprieve for your camera. Sadly it will very likely relapse in a few weeks. When it does you will need to order the repair part and make a permanent fix. The repair does not require any knowledge or experience with electronics. The key is taking your time, keeping track of which screw goes in which hole, and a gentle touch with incredibly small and delicate parts. If you can do brain surgery you will have no trouble with this -- and vice versa. Spend the $18. to order the part now, and start reading the posts on various contributor's step-by-step experiences. By the time the Detoxit fix has run its course you will be ready!

Thanks Dan, I just completed the $18 fix, and it works like new.  Wasn't so bad, took about 45 minutes, my eyes were the biggest problem.  Had some difficulty seeing the small screws.

Thank you for the follow-up information and the consideration to let me know. The idea of installing a replacement part seems less daunting after this first repair. I wiil be prepared. Smiley Happy

Nice feeling to fix something, isn't it.

I did order the part CM1-7226-000. Tried to replace per direction, but it is death. I don't know if I slice in the connector incorrectly or not. Anyone has an idea. I should bring it to Canon for them to see.

When I installed my replacement part, it was dead too. I wiggled the front connection down in a tad more, and it made everything work.It must have been a fraction of a millimeter difference.

I tried to contact Canon to see if they say anything. I don't know if they will fix it for free. Will let you know.

Recheck your connections, they are small and difficult.  I used tweezers to make sure they were fully in.  Also make sure the replacement board is in the correct location.  the on-off button may not be making full contact.

Where can I find the part??  can't find it on Canon's site?

thanks,
