LAMP, Powershot SX530HS

On the top of the camera, oposite side from the handgrip, on the top facing forward is a pencil-size clear window which the manual says is a "LAMP".  Cannot find any info on it in the users manual.  What is it and how and when is it used?

I think it is the red-eye lamp, but the manual does not say much. It usually turns on just before it takes an image to shrink the subject's pupil:
