Hello,
My understanding is that this model fax machine isn't inherently compatible to receive faxes over a voip phone line. I have gone into my communication settings for both receiving and sending faxes. The start speeds are at the highest level(33600 bps).
I've read that there is a device called a t.38 gateway that can be installed between the fax and the phone jack which serves to convert an analog signal to a digital signal.
I would like to keep this fax machine. Is it possible to affordably update it so that it can effectively communicate over a VOIP phone line?

Hi Lingpond,
Thanks for letting us know what Canon product you've got. The imageCLASS MF4880dw is an older model which we have retired. While that means that Canon USA no longer offers direct support for it, your friends here in the Canon Community are welcome to offer suggestions!
You can also speak with a Canon Upgrade Program specialist to help you score a modern replacement that would meet your current needs at a discount. You can reach them weekdays and Saturdays at 1-866-443-8002.
Hope this helps!

I have discovered that there are inexpensive devices that will allow a fax machine such as mine, to communicate over a VOIP line; essentially it works like the converter boxes that people used when TV signals went from analog to digital

There are a number of those kind of converters, I installed many of them for analog land lines, connections to security systems etc. However they are notoriously unreliable when it comes to standard fax machines. The reason for this is that VoIP's audio digitization processes are optimized for human speech, not the signals used by analog fax machines. Packet loss for voice transmission is acceptable in most cases, but for faxes, it can cause transmisson failures and lost pages.

Will the Canon ImageCLASS MF465dw work with a fiber phone line for faxing?
