It was designed before the Digital Rebel and the lens mount will only accept Canon EF lenses. Canon EF-S lenses won't fit unless you modify the mount.. Third party "crop camera" lenses (like Sigma and Tamron) will work just fine.
Are you saying that all third-party crop-camera lenses will clear the larger mirror of a FF camera? Because if they don't, they'd need the tab that prevents them from fitting an EF mount, in which case they wouldn't work on a D60. Right?

Yes, all 3rd party lenses will clear the mirror. Even those made for APS-C (digital only) cameras. They will have heavy vignetting in the corners, as they are not designed to project a Full Frame image on the sensor, but the will not hit the mirror.
