Hi, Xorthfred!

So that the Community can help you better, we will need to know exactly which model of printer you're using, and which operating system is running on your computer. That, and any other details you'd like to give will help the Community better understand your issue!

If this is a time-sensitive matter, our US-based technical support team is ready to help by phone at 1-800-OK-CANON (1-800-652-2666) weekdays and weeknights.

Thanks and have a great day!

I am trying to use the mg5200 but if I don't use it very often apparently he color ink dries up and it won't let me use black and white only even if I keep saving grayscale settings on plain paper.  It prompts me to go and keep spending money replacing the the color ink.

Hi Xorthfred,

You can disable the ink level detection function of the printer so you can continue to print in grayscale until you are able to replace the color ink.

To disable the ink level detection, please press and hold down the STOP/RESET or RESUME/CANCEL button on the printer for at least 7 seconds, then release it.  Please note that you will need to do this function for each ink tank that needs replacing.

Please note that we recommend that you replace the ink tanks that need replacing as soon as possible.  Once you replace the ink tanks with Canon genuine ink tanks, the ink level detection function of the printer will be re-enabled.

Hope this helps!
