Looking to upgrade

I currently have the rebel T5, I have had it for 9 years and it has worked really well, but I am thinking about upgrading. I’m still very green in photography, but love to do wildlife photography. I travel a lot and always bring my camera. I’m wondering what is the best to upgrade to. I did just buy the cannon 100-400 lens and would like to get something that is also compatible with.

Miquinney,

Do you have a budget in mind, and do you have any strong feelings one way or another about going mirrorless?

I’d like to stay under $1,000 & I’m open to any suggestions!

Great choice on the lens! Consider upgrading to a Canon R7!

You pose a good question and going mirrorless can seem daunting at first.

As an aside to the "going mirrorless" part of that question, I migrated from DSLRs to mirrorless about two years ago. The EF/RF converter gave me a lot of peace of mind. Because I was not totally convinced that I "needed" mirrorless, I grabbed an R100, the 40mm lens, and the converter to "give it a whirl". I do a lot of street photography and immediately found the R100 to be a go-anywhere coconspirator. That hooked me on mirrorless and GAS (gear-acquisition syndrome) kicked in with a full-frame body added to the mix and a migration to RF lenses over time. I almost jumped when the R came out and now I wish I had.

Because my film photography is done on Nikons and Pentaxes, I follow a Pentax forum where people swear that DSLRs are the Holy Grail and that mirrorless cameras are sheer evil. As a mirrorless "convert" I can attest to the change being painless and linked to budget as you have wisely noted.

Would that Lense fit on the R7?

Greetings

With a EF to EOS R adapter your lens would work with any mirrorless body.  We have your budget, but before we make additional recommendations, can you please tell us about the types of photography you do most?  Do you own any other lenses, and if so which?

Leap P really hit the nail on the head. Mirrorless is vastly superior to DSLRs.  Unless you have a compelling reason to stay with dslrs there is no reason not to go mirrorless.  They do everything a DSLR can do, just better, faster and with convenience features that will make you wonder why you didn't switch sooner.  They are really that good.

Wild life is my favorite and usually the only thing I do, the only other lens I have is the 18-55mm that came with my camera

Thank your for saying that, but it does come down to budget. I had the budget to switch to mirrorless, but I'm the kind of person who wants to get all the use out of something even to the point of ridiculousness. To illustrate, my go-everywhere camera was a Rebel XSi that I replaced with an R100. The R100 was a quantum leap forward vis a vis the XSi. And yes the R100 is the bottom of the bottom, but that switch resulted in a full-scale switch to mirrorless as I mentioned. The last remnant of the EFness (sic) is my 28-105 L that dates back to my switch from Pentax to Canon (film) 27 years ago.
