Where is ‘exposure simulation’ on R5ii?

Andy890

Hi. I have just purchased and updated my R5ii to the latest firmware 1.2.0. When using flash at night I need to be able to see the image on the rear screen or through the eye cup, in order to compose and focus the picture. At the moment it is just a black screen. On my R5, I would turn off exposure simulation which worked well but it seems to have gone from the Red menu, page 9 on the R5ii. Any idea where it has gone or what it is now called? or how I can view the scene for focus etc in the dark? Many Thanks.

The setting called Exposure simulation on the EOS R5 is now called Display simulation on the EOS R5 Mark II. You will find it on the 8th page of the red menus. Since Canon added the ability to simulate depth of field as well as exposure they changed the terminology from exposure to display simulation.

If you are not using a dedicated flash - such as a studio strobe unit and wireless trigger that does not do TTL - then just the same as for your EOS R5 you need to manually turn off the simulation by selecting Disable in the display simulation menu option.

The EOS R5 Mark II supports Exposure Simulation with flash. But settings must be changed first and the depth of field preview button must be used. Or any button configured for depth of field preview.

Exposure Simulation with Flash happens under these scenarios

  1. Exposure Simulation happens when the Depth of Field button is pressed.
  2. When Depth of Field button is pressed the lens will stop down and Exposure Simulation is switched back on when a flash or transmitter is powered on.
  3. The camera is configured to have set Display simulation is set to Exposure only during Depth of Field Preview for Exposure Simulation with Flash.
  4. Any special buttons set to assign Depth of Field function to other buttons and Exposure Simulation with Flash will work.
  5. Modeling Flash is NOT available on the EOS R series.
  6. When the Depth of Field Preview Button or any button configured for it is released and a flash or transmitter is mounted. Exposure Simulation with Flash is DISABLED.
  7. There is NOT a separate menu option to ENABLE/ DISABLE Exposure Simulation with Flash.

Hello Andy890,

This feature is called [Display simulation] on the EOS R5 Mark II. You will find that in the red camera menu #8
