Hi everyone. Since I started shooting the R3 and R5, I have been selecting certain RAW images from a day’s shoot and saving them in-camera as a separate JPEG file. I do this in order to download smaller files and process the JPEGs quickly on iPad.
This was done by reviewing an image in the camera, hitting the Q button, and then selecting the RAW J/H option (has a down arrow next to it) from the left side menu that appears. This is the menu that also features Lock and other options. Once I selected RAW J/H, I’d select JPEG specifically in the next step, and then in the third step, select “Save” to create the new image.
Suddenly today, I can no longer perform this function on the #R3. The RAW J/H menu item is grayed out. I am not having this issue on the R5
When I called CPS, they informed me the R3 cannot save RAW to Jpeg in camera. Which is bogus, because I’ve been doing it for years… and why would the option even appear in the menu in that case?
I have tried shooting with different cards, to no avail. The same issue occurs with both CFExpress and SD. I can only think there’s some other setting that needs to be changed in order to access this function again, but I can’t think of what it is. Any ideas??

Are you in green square mode? try a creative zone mode.

It’s been in Aperture all day. I only ever us Aperture, Shutter, or Manual.

I have just tried this on an EOS R3. The RAW J/H (down arrow) is greyed out when the image is already a JPG or a HEIFF image. I tried with a RAW + JPG and the conversion works, with a RAW only then it works, but if there is only a JPG captured then it won't work.
I suggest you review the image that is not working, press INFO to check the image you re converting is a RAW or RAW + JPG/HEIF.

Brian, thanks for looking into this.
The files I already shot are definitely RAW files. This morning I tried a RAW+JPEG per your suggestion, and the new image file has the same issue (the option is grayed out). I think switched back to RAW and tried again, with no luck.

Have you tried selecting the grayed out menu? By doing this, it will generally tell you what criteria hasn't been met.

Newton, the camera doesn’t allow you to even move the cursor (aka, “highlight”) grayed-out menu items.

Try it through the Playback 2 menu "RAW image processing" selection instead of Q during review. I just tried using the Q button while reviewing an image, and although it wasn't grayed out, a message fly-out said "RAW image processing disable", not disabled but disable, so that's not a typo 🙂 Anyway, the image converted through the Playback 2 menu.
To be clear, this isn't something I do in camera, but I know what you want to achieve.

Newton, this did work. Thank you. I saw the option, but ignored it since it’s more cumbersome than being able to do it “on the fly” as I scroll through images. Nice to know there’s an option that still works!
But still frustrated as to why it no longer works while reviewing individual images. Part of me wondered if there’s anything related to the latest firmware update, or possible software conflicts with my memory cards (SanDisk… thinking of the current 5DII issues). It’s definitely puzzling.
