R10 Manual mode, Auto ISO - how to activate exposure compensation?

Hi Mike,

With the EOS R10 there are only two dials on the camera body, the main dial and quick control dial. In manual mode by default the main dial controls shutter speed and the quick control dial controls aperture value. There are four ways to change exposure compensation when shooting with AUTO ISO in manual mode on the EOS R10.

1. Tap the exposure compensation scale on the LCD screen and use the main dial, quick control or the +/- buttons on the screen.
2. Use the control ring on RF lenses, or control ring mount adapter
3. Customise the quick control dial so that instead of aperture control it is exposure compensation. Though then you need to decide how to change aperture. Go to customise dials menu to find this.
4. Use a custom button configured for exposure compensation. While the button is pressed and held turn the main dial to change compensation. The following buttons can be assigned this function; AF-ON, asterisk, depth of field preview, SET.

Hi Mike,

Here's what I did with my EOS R10.

Firstly I changed the SET button to allow me to change exposure compensation while it was held down as I described above in point 4. 

Now I took these HDMI screen captures of the camera. They are slightly different in that you can't use touch control on a HDMI screen connected to the camera.

The first of the three shows the camera in manual with auto ISO and no compensation. 

Second frame shows +1 exposure compensation has been added.

Third frame was captured while holding the SET button pressed. You can see that the orange main dial icon is now next to the exposure compensation scale, not shutter speed, indicating that when the main dial is turned the exposure compensation will be adjusted. 

In the first two captures I was not touching any buttons, so the ISO just says AUTO with no value. In the last shot the ISO shows AUTO and 1250, this is because at this point I was also holding the SET pressed. 

The eagle-eyed will notice my framing moved and focus is hit and miss - I'm handholding the camera with one hand while operating the computer to capture the screenshots and didn't use a tripod.

Glad to see you have a solution. Brian explained how to program the [Set] button on the R10.

I've seen 142-3, but I have no "Control Ring". At present I am using a Tokina lens with EF mount, and between the camera and lens I've the Canon EF - EOS R adapter.

I have three other "old" Canon EF lens, and they have no "Control Ring".

So, if I've no control, there's no way to apply exposure comp to a camera in Manual mode with Auto ISO?

Mike, FWIW I don't have the R10, but the instructions for my R5 are the same. I tried it with one of my RF lenses and I couldn't get it to work, and even if it had worked it was very awkward to even try. You basically have to be using the rear screen. Now what I did do that was somewhat effective was bind Exposure Compensation to the control ring, but it sometimes acted wonky. Admittedly, my testing was somewhat flawed because the lighting was constantly changing and Auto ISO was making my meter fluctuate, plus, I never shoot in these modes 🙂 But when light was steady, I could use the control ring on the lens to change my EC while in manual mode with Auto ISO enabled.

I know this doesn't help your situation, and am truly sorry. If this feature is really important to you, you may be able to pick up a Canon RF-EF adapter with the control ring, on the cheap, providing the R10 will allow you to add that feature to the control ring. Hopefully, someone with an R10 will chime in.

I'm running out of buttons      :   (           - AF ON is back-button focus, Asterisk is eye detection -  and I've yet to figure out how to have them both depressed at the same time!
