EOS R7 and SanDisk Extreme Portable SSD (2TB) storage device connection issue

I just purchased a SanDisk Extreme Portable SSD (2TB) storage device thinking that I could connect it directly to my R-7 and download photos from card. I'm trying not to have to take my laptop on an upcoming trip. Doesn't seem to work.

Anyone have any thoughts, ideas or experience with this?

Thanks in advance.

I would question if the camera will have the ability to power a SSD.  They normally have to be attached to computer or laptops that have a powered USB port.

Furthermore, the camera's file management system is considerably more primative than that of a computer, and is designed to engage with a computer's FMS, but not initiate its own controlled interface with a large external storage device.
