EOS R50 "Cannot format. Change card"

Hi everyone,

I recently bought a used Canon R50 from MPB that was listed as spare parts due to being unable to read SD cards. I decided to take a chance on it, but I’m running into the same issue  every time I insert an SD card, I get the message:

When I turn on the camera: "Card cannot be accessed. Reinsert/change card or format with camera.”

When I try to format card via camera: “Cannot format. Change card."

Here’s what I’ve already tried so far:

  • Re-formatted SD cards correctly on my computer (exFAT).

  • Tested multiple cards, including a full-size SanDisk Extreme Pro 128GB and a microSD 32GB with adapter.

  • Verified that the lock switch isn’t engaged.

  • Cleaned the SD card contacts with isopropyl alcohol.

  • Updated the camera’s firmware to the latest version.

  • Performed a full camera reset.

Despite all that, the camera still won’t recognize or format any card. I’m starting to think it might be a hardware issue with the SD card reader itself.

Has anyone experienced this with the R50 or similar Canon mirrorless models? Is it typically a bent pin or a full card-slot board failure? Any guidance or repair cost estimates would be appreciated.

Greetings,

I've seen both things you mentioned cause card read/formatting issues.  If you were hoping for a functioning camera I'd return it.  Standard recommendation is don't start with a broken camera.

You can grab a refurbished R50 and lens here.

From what I have heard is that MPB does test the products they sell and they listed this as spare parts.  I would think if they thought a repair was reasonably priced where they could still sell it with a profit they would have done so.  If they will take a return I would return it, or find another parts camera if you think you can fix it.
