EOS R5 shutter speed won't go higher than 1/250

Hi,

I have the Canon RF 24-70, f2.8 L IS USM lens.

I shoot in manual, but I find I cannot go higher than 250 on the shutter speed. Any ideas why this is so?

Hey there!

Which camera are you using?

Canon R5

There are  two possibilities:-

  • You have a Speedlite on the hotshoe and it is switched on. This limits the shutter speed to the camera's sync speed which is 1/250, unless you use high speed sync mode.
  • You have configured the custom function for Set shutter speed range - it's on the C.Fn2 menu page. If there is a blue star next to the entry on the menu there's some limitation set.

Thank you, I will check.
I have a trigger on my camera for a strobe. Can that be it?

Yes the maximum flash sync is 1/250th. So to use flash with higher shutter speeds you need to use HSS/ FP flash. But at the cost of less power because the flash now has to pulse to avoid the shutter curtains from being visible.

Hi,

how would I set the flash to work in HSS mode, so I can go higher on the shutter speed?

Are you using a Canon speedlite if so what model. If its a newer Canon Speedlite released in or 2007 it can be set from the camera's External Speedlite Control Menu. If its an model it will have to be set from the speedlite itself. Newer models can be set from BOTH the External Speedlite Control Menu or directly on the Speedlite itself. If from the camera set it to the lightning bolt with H icon.

Thank you!

How about when I use my Flashpoint strobe?

Your flash has to support it. Since it’s a 3rd Party product it has to be set directly on the flash itself.
