EOS R5 Mark II issues with colors and corrupted images

Hi,

Any R5M2 owner encountered a "layer" of additional/missing colour platter in your photo taken?

Initially, I encounter image preview issue where the camara states that the "current image cannot be previewed" on the camera but didn't thought much about as it was already night and I'm shooting the cuscus near the homestay. But things took a turn the next day when I'm shooting the bird of paradise. A quick preview on some of the images show symptom the night before and worst, photos with additional/missing colour platter.

As I continue to review the images, I noticed some of the images either have a tinge of colour, e.g. green, yellow, pink etc., either in in full or partial on the images.

Initially, I thought it could be due to the slower SanDisk UHS 2 SD card wasn't able to catch-up with the write speed that causes the problem. So, I removed the SD card and let the camera write to the faster Prograde CFExpress card with the sustainable write speed of 1300MB/s.

However, the issue persisted and even more ridiculous! I took the camera for a sunrise shoot one morning, instantly, the 1st shot encountered the problem describe above on the CFExpress card. Therefore, the theory of incapable card or heating is ruled out. 

Would like to hear from follow R5M2 owner if you've encountered such issues.

The camera config is as followed

I've reported the issue to my local Canon support, and they have acknowledged the issue since they can reproduce the problem.

Their advice is not to use V60 SDXC for the time being until a remedy is available.

Sounds like the thing I already wrote about. Files from my 6D, 7D, 30D, 1Ds that in the raw file doesn't have any masked pixels or any black level offset, 300D, D30, D60.

Hi Peter,

You may be right about the masked pixels based on the depth of your technical knowledge. But if shots show up in DPP with inconsistency or unreadable, users will take it as a issue with the camera/photos instead of something else.

Like my shot "R52A0049.CR3" it does appear washed out on FastStone, but unreadable in DPP 4.18, and underexposed by at least 2.5 stop in DPP 4.19 from the next shot with the same setting. To a normal user, this would be a problem with the camera.

BTW, what is the software you used, I would like to try it out to correct the black level correction.

For CR3 files, darktable relays on LibRaw. Same as FastStone I suppose. LibRaw is released around once a year.

It means that darktable out of the box doesn't support R5 II if you don't compile it with the R5 II changes. I haven't done it for R5 II. How to do here https://blog.pandainthecloud.de/2024/09/07/adding-new-camera-support-in-darktable-libraw-exiftool/

As a workaround you can just convert the CR3 files to DNG. Both Adobe DNG Converter and DNGLab support R5 II.

Highlight Tone Priority will often be under exposed if your software doesn't read the HTP tag and is able to compensate for it.

I am not at my computer right now, but latest release for DPP, is it 4.19.30 for Windows and 4.19.31 for OS X?

Hello, I have similar problem with similar memory cards. I was also planning to switch to the fast cfexpress  card but didn't make sense as these SD card speeds are for 6K&8K video, some raw photo file recording shouldn't be a problem.

For me like 1 in 100 photos are either color washed or like some part of the photo image is cut, like the legs of a person moved to the side such with different colors.

I also thought that I tried a lot of different settings as the camera is new. I switched to mechanical shutter at some point. I was wondering if it can be related with that so decided to make a research first. Either way feels a little weird as this is my third Canon digital camera and first time I'm experiencing such problem.

I only record raw and CR3 files by the way.

I'll try to understand Peter's solution. So the files are not damaged or anything, it's just a software problem?

First thing with a new card is to tick the low level format checkbox in the camera and hit Format. This will also reset the write speed to best performance.

Share some affected raw files and use a filehost like WeTransfer, Google Drive, Dropbox. Also tell us what software you use to view the raw files.

Hi,

The problem you encountered does not matter is you used mechanical or E shutter. I highly suspect is a buffering problem as more cases I read around the web is encountered by owners using the V60 cards.

I believe when you say your SD card are for 6K&8K video, it should be a UHS-II V90 card. If it is not V90, it should not be capable enough to do 8K video. As I don't owned any V90 card, I can't confirm if there is any issue when capturing RAW with that. Nonetheless, there are UHS-II card that are only V60 capable, you can spot them easily on the label on the card itself.

Nonetheless, my local Canon support have confirmed there is image recording issues with the V60 card since they are able to replicate the issues reported by me. They have suggest to use the CFE card for the time being prior to the a solution is available.

For you image corruption issue, I suggest you open it with the latest DPP software, as earlier version may encounter the same problem you face, e.g. photo that are washed out like "R52A0049.RAW" example on the start of the thread. Once I updated my DPP to 4.19.30.0, the wash out issue goes away, but the image have been underexposed by at least 2-stops as show below. 

Thus far, this is the only file with white washed out I open and edit to test if it is recoverable.  Whereas for other files that are not white washed out, those are fit to face the wrath of the delete key, such as those below. The files is not recoverable, even DPP can only show it with a BIG QUESTION mark. 

PS: If you used a V90 card and have the same issue, please let me know the brand and the card model. I'll like to feedback to Canon support on that.

Hi Jason, 

It's V60, exactly the card you wrote on the main post.

I downloaded the latest DPP, it just crashes when I try to open one of the images. Lightroom says it doesn't recognize my CR3 files. So I used Faststone to view the images in the end.

I'm far from home. When I return back I'll give a more detailed explanation.

I'm OK with using the CF card or buy a V90 as long as it's a solution.

Hi Peter,

Try waiting for the program to respond, it takes a while for DPP to open those problematic images. If the photo is a goner, DPP will show a BIG QUESTION mark like the below. 

 

If you have PS, there maybe a chance to salvage the file using Adobe RAW. 1st, create a PS  shortcut in your desktop, drag the RAW file from explorer or FS over to PS icon and let PS use Adobe RAW to open the problematic image. But if you attempt to start PS and than open the corrupted file, PS will report that the file is corrupted and won't be able to open it. Below is the file I tried earlier, and export to it JPEG. I've tried a few images, some are successful, others are a goner.

As for the memory card, I would suggest to get the CFE if you plan to shoot high speed burst and do 8K video. My original intent was to dedicate each type for a specific purpose until the SD card issue crop up.

I got my Prograde Digital CFE 1TB 1700R/1300W for ~300 back in July. The newer and faster speed 1TB 1700R/1500W is only going for 350 in both Amazon and BH Photo.

If you get the V90 SDXC, you pay 50% more and only get half the capacity of the CFE.

I bought a 256 GB CFE card when I was buying the camera. Ofc 1 week later a bundle came out with a free 512 CFE lol My luck...

I was planning to store the photos on the SD card and videos on the CFE. I never thought I would experience such problems, otherwise I would store them on both the cards. It was a good lesson, never trust a product nowadays. As releasing firmwares is easy thanks to internet development I feel like we all became testers until the product becomes stable.

I may go for a V90 later when the prices become more reasonable. Even though a card reader is not necessary nowadays with the option of connecting the camera or using Wi-Fi to transfer files, I have SD card readers, one of them is even installed on my PC as a port directly.

I'm still away from home. I'll keep working on the problem when I go back 🙂
