EOS R100 wont turn on

Hi, today I received my Canon EOS R100 (so it’s brand new). I used it for a few minutes right after opening it, and while I was sending photos to my phone through the camera app, it suddenly turned off.

Even though I charged the battery for hours and tried every button combination I found online, the camera won’t turn on.

The only sign of life I sometimes get is the small red light near the screen that briefly flashes when I reinsert the battery, but the screen stays completely black.

I’ve tried removing and reattaching the lens, taking out the SD card, and everything else, but nothing works.

Please give me some advice because I can’t return it or get a refund.

Does the Electronic Viewfinder (EVF) Work? Something may have disabled the rear LCD. If that is the case, you will need to navigate the menus using the EVF and reactivate the rear LCD.

The button Steve is referring to isn't "DISP" on your camera, it is "INFO". So you may be able to toggle it to get your rear LCD to show up.

If the above fails, you can try a "Hard Reset". To do this, remove the battery, CF card, and lens, then press the shutter button for at least 30 seconds or longer. Put it all back in place with a fully charged battery and power up.

Did the camera include a Canon warranty card? Why won't the seller/dealer accept the camera for return or exchange? Did you possibly buy a "gray market" camera?

Try the suggestions listed above. Some of them may get things working properly again. Meanwhile, if you used a credit card to make this purchase check with the card issuer and see they will stop payment for you. Better to find this out sooner than later. And best of luck getting this resolved.

As soon as I saw "can't return it" my heart sank because (1) no one deserves their joy being ruined by a defective camera and (2) the R100 is a really wonderful, go-everywhere "friend" that because of its size can hide in a backpack or in the center console of your car (weather permitting) ready to shoot pictures. I noted the great suggestions here. My experience with the R100 has been flawless and mine usually has the 28mm RF "pancake" lens on it which has allowed me to take advantage of moments on the fly.
