Hello,
I am having difficulty connecting my camera (#EOS Rebel T7) to my macbook in order to upload the photos I have taken. I have read the manual for the camera and followed the instructions with no luck. Dowloaded software I was instructed with, still no luck. What am I doing wrong? Is there a simpler step-by-step guide somewhere than can help?

How are you trying to download them? What is going wrong?
on my t6s I just plug in a usb cable via a dock and go.
you don’t need any other software. Just start up ImageCapture before you plug in the camera.

Have Windows11- I plug a USB cable into the phone and plug into my Lenovo laptop. Follow the instructions. Or from the camera, I insert the card into the slot on the laptop and follow the instructions. Computers can be a great help or a great frustration. Let us know what you find for an answer.

I am not a Macbook user buy my son is and has not problem with connection. If your Mac only has USB-C ports, you may need a USB-C to USB-A adapter.
Also you may want to get a SD reader and connect it. Actually the reader will probably be faster.

I am not sure since I am not a Mac users and I don't have a Rebel any longer but have you explored wireless.
Canon’s EOS Utility software may be able your transfer photos wirelessly via the camera's Wi-Fi settings. Someone else with more experience with your setup would be the person to ask.

Use a cord to connect your camera to your Mac. Problem solved. I specifically don't use wireless transfer between my cameras and my Mac because I discovered--in my experience at least--that the wired connection is faster than wireless. Open Photos. Connect the cord to the camera and import them.

"Use a cord to connect your camera to your Mac. Problem solved."
With two caveats:
Make sure WiFi is off on the camera.
Sometimes you have to run Image Capture manually to kick it in the pants.

I've literally never had to do either.

I only use wireless to connect to other wireless devices; smart phones, tablets, etc. I use the provided cable to connect to my computer.

But if someone has tried to use WiFi they might forget to turn it off.
As far as Image capture, I haven't either, but if you come in fresh to a new computer, you sometimes need to do it.
