Consistent Overexposure with EOS Rebel Cameras & Speedlite Flash

AnnieO

I have a Canon T6i - use Auto mode- with flash bracket, shoe cord and a canon Speedlite. All is fine then in September it started to overexpose the photo - not every one but many at the event. then I read on a forum that it happens with Canon Speedlites - I then got a Neewer flash, and two Godox flashes - same issues. All in TTL setting. I then got the Canon T8i - and same issues. Then I tried new shoe cords - same issue. Tried not using the flash bracket - same issue - then I tried the new camera and a different lens - same issue. I am at the end of my experiments and cannot figure the issues. Please help - I have many events coming up and need this to work. I have asked so many people and no one can seem to help. I changed batteries, I used the rechargable battery for one of the Godox. All the same issues HELP

Yes I live with that Tamaron lens for a couple of years. I did try a Canon lens yesterday with the Godox flash - with the flash bracket, shoe cord and the new camera Canon T8iIMG_1697.JPGIMG_1698.JPG

Did you use flash for the 2nd picture it definitely looks like its overexposed. The EXIF Data shows no flash was used. Canon lenses and some 3rd party lenses have a distance encoder for flash exposure. The distance info for flash exposure only works for direct flash not with bounce flash.

"This first happened last year with the Canon430EX. Then I bought the Canon 580EX. It was good for about a year till this past September. Then I tried the Neewer NW561. Still happened. Then tried the Godox TT685II still happened. Then tried the Godox V1. Still happens. Tried different show cords with the flash bracket. Tried no flash bracket. Then got the new camera Canon T8i still happens."

OP has tried five flash units and two cameras and still the same problem. If, as kv asks, it's the same lens in all cases then its a lens problem.

If it's different lenses then the only constant would seem to be the photographer. Are you sure the settings are consistent between good and bad shots Annie?

The pictures with EXIF Data report that a Rebel T6i was used for the shots. None of the shots had EXIF that showed that a Rebel T8i was used. Also the EXIF Data reported that that the above mentioned Tamron lens was used.

I do not change the settings and yes it was the same lens - so that is the only thing I did not change - but I did yesterday - and got the examples I just postedIMG_1697.JPGIMG_1698.JPG

What’s interesting to me is that while the subjects are slightly overexposed the more distant area, like the door, seems even more overexposed. Was this on camera or off camera flash?

I know that older speedlites do not factor in crop factor. Which could cause overexposure but not that much. The 430EX and 580EX apply crop factor automatically older speedlites DO NOT support this. All speedlites released after the original 430EX and original 580EX automatically apply crop factor.

I use the flash bracket with shoe cord

It was only last week that I tried not using flash bracket and just put the flash on the camera

Which speedlite are you using in the hot shoe. A Canon speedlite or a 3rd party speedlite that is causing this. Or Both Canon and 3rd party speedlites.

I have used the Canon T6i with bracket with all Canon 580EX, 430EX, Neewer NW 561, Godox TT685II, Godox V1. With th Tamaron lens. Then last week I used the Canon T8i with the Godox TT685II and no bracket. Then this week was the Canon T8i, with Godox V1 and Canon lens 18-55 with Braket. All in auto mode and ETTL
