On Sonoma 14.6.1
For several months I've been seeing the EOS Utility Launcher modal dialog appear with "Communication with the camera via USB cannot be established". It hasn't (obviously) affected uploading of images. Have been seeing it on multiple computers.
Just saw the reference to an incompatibility with the EOS Web Cam Utility.
The issue seems to coincide with the period when I was experimenting with the Web Cam Utility bringing an old M50 back into service. Having just uninstalled the Web Cam Utility (there is an uninstaller on Mac) I'm confirming that there is definitely an issue that is fixed by removing the Web Cam Utility. I've wasted about 30-45 minutes figuring this out. Hopefully, if you find this you'll only waste 10 minutes,
Seems to be a known issue. Surely, some Canon software engineering effort can be put into making web cam and EOS utility co-exist in a stable manner? (not saying it's easy, given that there are multiple parts to this puzzle). It's a valid customer use case. Serial USB should be robust.
The plan B approach of connecting a Mac to the camera over Wi-Fi (instead of serial) seemed to be more reliable before I removed the web cam utility. Several steps to make it all work. You do have to route your whole wifi connection to the camera.

Hi dd_chroma!
To have a better understanding of your issue, please let us know which camera you're having this issue with. In your post, you mention the M50, but at the bottom of your post the R5 and R5 C are pictured. Just looking to confirm which one is causing the issue so that we can better understand and help. Any other details you'd like to give will only help the Community better understand your issue.
If this is a time-sensitive matter, please check out your other support options here: https://canon.us/MyCanonAccount
Thanks!

R5 and R5C are the ones that I want to use with EOS Utility (and other photo tools - these bodies are the workhorses).
M50 is the one I only want to use with Web Cam Utility.
There is a potential scenario (which I haven't tried) where you have the M50 plugged in permanently and you are plugging in either R5/R5C to do photo uploads.
When I first experimented with the web cam utility, I did have several attempts at installation and noted that it wasn't super reliable / consistent.

Greetings dd_chroma,
Currently, it is not possible to have multiple cameras connected to a computer at the same time when using the equipment with either the EOS Utility or the EOS Webcam Utility software applications.
In the meantime, I have submitted your feedback to our software engineers for consideration. Please note that decisions to incorporate changes to how the software functions are made by our software engineers based on a number of factors. Consumer demand, technological limitations, and customer feedback are all taken into consideration.
