Canon Rebel T1i (500d) External Monitor

I know it's a REALLY old camera, but I am still using the Canon Rebel T1i (500D). I was wondering if I could use the HDMI OUT port to connect an external monitor to the camera (for live view). If anyone knows, please respond. Thanks!

Sure, but note that it is not "clean" video, it is just a mirror of the LCD with all the shooting info icons.

And yours is not "Really old" we often get questions about Xs', Xi' and the odd Rebel G around here.

My wife and I still have our XTi's. We never use them, but they're available in case any of our grandchildren get interested enough to need something beyond their cell phones.

Thanks! However, I don't understand what you mean by "clean" video. Are you saying that you can't shoot video with the monitor on?

Just what I said. The video on the monitor has all the icons that show on the LCD while shooting a video like the focus point, the time remaining, the little red tally symbol...

If you are just using the monitor for review it is fine, if you are using an external recorder it might not work so well.

I have the same question—I have an old T1i that I want to use as a simple photo booth.

I have a plug-in intervalometer that (when you press a button on it) will take 4 photos, spaced a couple of seconds apart.

I have a min-HDMI to mini-HDMI cable that I run from my T1i to a little 7" color LCD screen, but just fiddling with it for a minute or two, I only see like the "settings" screen on the plugged in screen—that is, the setting of the camera shown on a light background, not a "live" view, or a display of the photo that was just taken.

Maybe I need to do some more fiddling, but if you know how I need to have my T1i set so that the external screen will show both the "live" view and the "photo I just took", please let me know!

Thanks!

shooting menu 1 lets you set the review time for after shot playback.

Fantastic, kvbarkley!

Thank you so much!

Hmm, while I do get the initial Live View, once I press the button on the intervalometer and the camera starts taking photos, it doesn’t show the photos taken on the screen—the screen just remains blank—until it’s done and then it shows the Live View again.

Ah, I think I may have figured it out—so was taking 4 photos, 1 photo every 3 seconds, but I think 3 seconds wasn’t enough time for the camera to write the image and send it to the external screen. I tried changing it to take a photo every 10 seconds, and that gave it time to flash display the last photo taken.
