Good day,
I'm hoping somebody may be able to help, I've got a canon 5d Mk II, my old faithful. It won't fully turn on.
- The back screen turns on, but no information is displayed. The top LCD and inside the viewfinder has nothing.
- I can cycle the shutter, though no image is captured.
- I can plug it into my computer, it is recognized and I can access images on a memory card if present.
I've tried taking out the clock battery, main battery, lens, letting it sit, pressing the shutter release, still the same result. I've checked the battery door switch. Unfortunately my second battery is missing at the moment, I am looking to find another.
Any suggestions?
Thanks,
André

Have you tried pressing the info button to see if the rear LCD screen works.

I have, it will turn "on" but it's just black pixels. Same as with the menu, review buttons.
Good news is, I found my spare battery in a random bin (I was certain it was with my in-laws). It's charging, so will try that shortly.

I noticed that you said that the info in the viewfinder was missing. There should be info on the bottom of the viewfinder in green. Have you tried removing the lens and CF Card from the camera from the camera to see if it would fully power up. What lens is attached to the camera FULL NAME please and whether it is Canon or 3rd Party.

There is absolutely nothing in the viewfinder.
I have tried with a Canon 24-70mm f/2.8 L USM and a Canon 70-200mm f/2.8 L IS USM.
Tried both with an without CF card, and lens, same result. Back LCD comes on, but just black pixels. Nothing visable. Can still cycle the shutter my pressing the shutter release.

It looks like there is something wrong with your camera. It needs repair but Canon no longer supports a 3rd Party repair company could repair it. But replacement is a cost effective option as repair will more than likely exceed the value of the camera. I would highly recommend looking into an EOS R series camera as a replacement. Do you have a budget in mind for a new camera. Your current EF lenses can be adapted to a new EOS R series camera. These new cameras use the RF Mount now instead of the EF Mount. When adapting lenses I highly recommend using Canon brand EF-RF Mount adapters not 3rd Party. Current Full Frame EOS R series cameras are as follows EOS R8, EOS R, EOS R6 Mark II, EOS R5 Mark II, EOS R3 & EOS R1. I have listed them from least expensive to most expensive and from Entry level to Professional Grade. The EOS R6 series and higher end cameras offer IBIS (In Body Image Stabilization). Which isn't found in cheaper bodies such as the EOS R8.
