Would canon 7D Mark ii's auto focus work with Canon 400mm f5.6 when 1.4x extender attached? I know the autofocus will work with 1d series when 1.4x extender attached, I was wondering if it works with the newer SLRs.

"I have a 5d marking now ..."
???
I had all the 5D series. I had two 7D's (not the Mk II). I sold all of that and now use a 1Ds Mk III and the 1D Mk IV. IMHO, this is as good as it gets, except for the 1Dx. The Mk IV is the last of the H sensor and one reason its used price stays fairly high, It is a favorite with the birder crowd.
I can have any camera I want but and I choose the 1D Mk IV.

The 7D Mk II is a better choice over the 1D Mk IV. From the 7D Mk II's better AF system, to a greater crop factor, the 7D Mk II has the same high ISO perfromance, the same batteries as the 5D Mk II or Mk III, same degree of weather sealing as the 1D Mk IV, the choice of using a battery grip to give you similar ergonomics to the 1D camera, or the choice to go without the grip for a smaller more compact camera.

I have the 7DII and the 400mm f/5.6 and I have used them with the 1.4X...you can shoot bird in flight with it but the keep rate is low and it's not much fun as the AF lags too much for fast action. The IQ is not too bad though...you have to look hard to tell.
Regarding the 7DII and 1DMarkIV...I don't have the 1D Mark IV except for brief handling and test shots...Personally I don't think you can beat a 1D anything with a 7D anything...it's a whole class above... like comparing a Camero against a Corvette... I'd get a 1D Mark IV over the 7DII in a heart beat except that the 1D Mark IV only gives you 1.3 magnification factor versus the 7DII 1.6 - if reach is important to you - it appears to be since you already have a full frame. Reach was the reason I got the 7DII not because it's a better camera.

Sorry, I'd take a 2016 Camaro SS over a 1979 Corvette any day.

Thanks,
I didn't realize that with a 1D Mk IV that you lose the cross type AF with an f/5.6 lens on all but the center AF point.

So would I. Not even a choice. Most of the specs are similar so most of the stuff is a wash. But one thing where the Mk IV is better is the larger pixels from the larger sensor. It is going to produce better pictures.
Regarding the AF system, the two are still pretty close. Now when you consider I only use the center point 95% of the time the Mk IV wins every time.
The Mi IV just feels better, too. It is more rugged. Once you go I series, you will never go back!
