Canon EOS R5 Mark II freezing with all Angelbird CF-Express Type B cards

With my Canon R5 Mark II, I got some serious issues with Angelbird CF-Express B cards. Every time I boot-up the R5II in movie mode, the camera freezes instantly after the screen goes on but before the control elements of the screen are shown. It consistently happens with both an AV PRO 256GB and an AV PRO 1TB. It seems as if the camera couldn't access the card or something. Switching off won't work, the battery has to be ejected, the camera has to be put in photo mode before the battery is put back in again. In photo mode though, the camera does boot up and I can switch into movie mode sometimes without freezing. It's a bit annoying since a range of tested SanDisk CF-Ex-B Extreme Pro cards with different capacities all work seemlessly..

The use of the Refresh via SSD Manager and FW update tool of the cards didn't change anything.

Please fix it with the upcoming FW update Canon. ASAP. This is making the camera borderline unusable.

The R5II has FW 1.0.2 installed. I checked disabling all other settings like network and power saver and so on..

Greetings,

Please save your current configuration to an SD card.  Now reset the cameras, main and custom settings.  Retest with the Angel bird cards.

Are you using ANY 3rd Party accessories on the camera ie lens, mount adapter, speedlite or battery grip.

No. Also without any CF-Express-B card inserted but only an SD card it also works fine to boot up in movie mode. Even If I still have one of the Angelbird CF-Express B cards inserted and boot up with the SD card selected as card recording media, the freezing error doesn't occur. The error is independent of the selected recording mode or codecs.

Have you tried a different CF Express Type B to rule out the slot as the problem.

As already written in my initial posting: All CF-Express Type B cards from SanDisk (Extreme Pro 256GB, 512GB) work seemlessly. All tested Angelbird Cards (AV PRO 256GB as well as 1TB) consistently produce the same freezing error.

This is the first I’ve ever heard of a problem like this. Where did you buys these CF Express Type B cards at.

Well this is why I posted it. I bought them from Angelbird directly, what does it matter?

We’ve had users buy counterfeit memory cards from Amazon and other various online retailers. They believed their camera was the problem but it was the card that was the problem.

Greetings ,

It matters because some sources are unreliable and sell counterfeit cards.  I have four angel birds CF Express type B cards and two sandisk.  They all perform as expected.  I'd contact AngelBird. They have a great warranty and stand behind their products.

Alright thanks, I understand. But this shouldn't be an issue when buying directly over their web store. So I would rule this one out and also not blame it on an individual card since the error is reproducible. Also the cards do work for recording photos and film in my R5 Mark II but just booting up with those cards in movie mode causes the camera to freeze.  Booting up with the freshly initialized cards in my C300 Mark III works fine as well.
