I bought a used 5D mkiv the last view days. And there is one thing I can't figure out. When selecting the Automatic Selection AF (the maximum focus points) there is a difference between Live View shooting (showing the points where I have focus) and View Finder mode where I only get focus at the centre point. It is for the Av and Tv modes.
Lenses should be ok, I tested it with Canon 50mm 1.4 and Canon 24-105 4L IS II USM.
In full auto mode I get the same results for Live View and View Finder display. Showing the correct points which are in focus.
Am I missing something?
Thanks.
Manfred

There was a third place to reset the camera to factory settings which I hadn't found. Besides Clea all Custom Functions I had to reset the Custom Controls to the default set.
Thanks Brian for your help.

Focus areas are independent for live view (lcd viewing) and viewfinder operation.
It sounds like you have a single AF point selected for viewfinder operation. Looking at the back of the camera press the button on the top right corner then press the little slide button next to the joystick to change to one of the other AF areas.
i do suggest you download the manual and check the getting started section. Also it might be an idea to reset the camera to default settings too.

Thanks Brian for coming back. I tried all of your suggestions before I posted. I downloaded the menu, I double checked the behavior with the behavior on my 90d (which is working fine). I can switch to other AF options with the two buttons on the back of the camera but only the single point AF is working. If I select one of the zones, they show as selected but none of the AF points are showing or working when i press the AF-ON button.
And I did a full reset as well before posting.

Are you using AI Servo AF for the viewfinder shooting? If so what setting do you have for Initial AF pt, AI Servo AF, it should be auto by default, but if set to either of the other two settings then you will have a highlighted AF point.
This post from my website gives some more about that initial AF point setting.

Last thought, can you check the custom controls, and the setting for the AF-ON button, it should be metering and AF start, but you'll see that the INFO detail set. text appears on the LCD, press the INFO and then check that the camera is no forcing single AF point.

Hi Brian, thanks again. The AI Servo AF is set to AUTO. Checked up on your website - good information. I have reset my custom controls again. AF-ON was on metering and AF start.
What I find puzzeling is that the AF point selection from a zone is working in LiveView but not in ViewFinder mode. All the settings work for both shooting types, correct?
Thanks again.

Glad you fixed it. Yes there are a few different settings for resets, and like you found the custom buttons are not reset when custom functions are reset, despite custom buttons being in the custom function section.
