I have a canon R8 and have found what I consider a bug.
If the AF Point selection button is remapped to any other function in shooting mode, it does not work to magnify when in playback mode.
If the AF Point selection button is left to default function, i.e. selecting the af point mode, then magnification works as expected in playback mode.
My expectation would be that regardless of what the button is mapped to in shooting mode, its function in playback mode should remain unchanged.
Is this known and is there a fix for it?

The same situation occurs with EOS R10 which has similar layout of buttons as the EOS R8. I can see why this does this, but agree that it is not overly helpful. Canon tries to make all EOS cameras with "shooting priority"; which means that when a button that is providing a shooting function is pressed it overrides playback or menu display to do the shooting function.
One workaround is to use the custom buttons to utilise one of the other buttons on the camera and assign Magnify images during playback so that you have a magnify button. You could use one of the up/down/left/right keys on the back.

It’s not a bug. The default behavior of the button defines different functions when the camera is in different operating modes, such as shooting or playback.
When you redefined the button, one function was defined for all operating modes.
It would be convenient if you could define different functions for different operating modes.
High camera models get around this issue by having more buttons. No buttons change behavior when you change operating modes.
