I purchased a slightly used 5DS R, needed a secondary for my 5D MIII. Everything worked great, viewfinder displayed all AF points, leveler, etc. I shot with it for a test run and it was fine. Going through the settings I realized the firmware was out of date. I updated to the current version online (1.14), nothing went wrong during update. Now I have no AF points in viewfinder, no level, can't get a grid. Initially the points were viewable via the LCD screen and I could still select. I reset all the camera settings thinking I had done something to hide them while shooting test shots. Now I can't see the AF points anywhere. I've removed battery, changed lenses (300mm f4 and 24-70 2.8- both work fine on the camera and on my 5d Miii), etc. I have the red illumination turned on and can see it when I press AF-on....... Does anyone know of a fix for this? Am I missing something??

What happens when you press the AF area selection mode and then either use the M-Fn button to cycle through the selections (or use the Main Dial control to move through the AF selection area if you have that set to Main Dial under AF-4 like I do on my cameras)? You should see the AF selection area and your choice of AF points through the viewfinder as you set this up.
I have a couple of 5DS R bodies and a 5DS, all are running on 1.13 and I never bothered updating to 1.14 since they are working as intended. I doubt if there is a bug in 1.14 causing this but maybe that is the case.
Did you do both "clear all camera settings" which is under the yellow tool menu fourth screen AND clear all custom functions which is under the orange camera menu (next menu section after tool)? Make sure that you have the camera mode set to M or one of the other settings that allows access to ALL menu functions when you do these resets.

You should see AF points in Intelligent Auto shooting mode following a reset. Have you tested for this in Live View mode, too?

I do not see them in Auto- that's just it, the focus point is gone as is the level, when I try to select Select AF comes up on the bottom of the viewfinder, but no points. When in live view I see the center box just like on my mkiii, but no AF points? Not sure as I don't use Live View in my shooting. When I first noticed this problem I still had selectable points on the back of the camera even though I was not in Live View.

If I half press shutter or press AF-on, the viewfinder illuminates red light- but no points appear. I don't normally turn use that, but turned it on to see if anything happened. I set the main dial to go through points. If you roll the dial, nothing happens at this point, I can't see that if I roll it and take a picture that the AF point has moved.
I did go back and clear all custom settings also and it made no difference. I am kicking myself for running the firmware update but the version on it was something like 1.08 and I figured it needed updated. I was hoping I'd missed something, but it's sounding like it'll have to go in for repair- something has failed miserably. I was hoping to use this while I sent the mkiii off for a tune up.

Update to end thread: I did a dummy and left the battery pack and lens attached when updating firmware- did not know that could cause issues. Canon online tech had me drain power and restart. Camera is now displaying all AF points, grid, etc. in view finder.
