5DS R won't display AF points after firmware update

I purchased a slightly used 5DS R, needed a secondary for my 5D MIII. Everything worked great, viewfinder displayed all AF points, leveler, etc. I shot with it for a test run and it was fine. Going through the settings I realized the firmware was out of date. I updated to the current version online (1.14), nothing went wrong during update. Now I have no AF points in viewfinder, no level, can't get a grid. Initially the points were viewable via the LCD screen and I could still select. I reset all the camera settings thinking I had done something to hide them while shooting test shots. Now I can't see the AF points anywhere. I've removed battery, changed lenses (300mm f4 and 24-70 2.8- both work fine on the camera and on my 5d Miii), etc. I have the red illumination turned on and can see it when I press AF-on....... Does anyone know of a fix for this? Am I missing something??

Update to end thread: I did a dummy and left the battery pack and lens attached when updating firmware- did not know that could cause issues. Canon online tech had me drain power and restart. Camera is now displaying all AF points, grid, etc. in view finder.

Need more info. During focus or at playback?

Sorry, conversation got posted somehow and I hadn't typed message. All info is above.

Have you checked the display settings in the menus?

Yes, and reset the camera settings 2x. I've tried deselecting the Auto AF select, have it on manual pt selection, dug through the manual yesterday. I'm set on M and after resetting camera settings the second time I not only don't have AF at focus, but can't even select the point from the back screen now.

If resetting camera to factory settings doesn’t restore factory functionality you might need to send to Canon for service. You could contact support at 1-800-OK-CANON.

I want to point out that camera IS Autofocusing, but I can't see the chosen point. If I enable the AF point display on playback it shows me the AF point that was used. But right now I can't even tell where it's set.

It says I'll have to wait until Monday, but that is the plan if I can't find a solution.

Greetings,

I think my colleagues have covered the essential "potential" problem areas and your settings reset should have resolved the behavior.

I also reviewed the firmware release notes for thoroughness.

Just to confirm you are shooting in standard RAW? (not M or S RAW).  Not that we'd expect to see missing AF points either way.

Yes, shooting in RAW. Is it possible to downgrade the firmware to see if that is a solution? It really appears the firmware update did something.
