EOS R5 and sigma Art 50mm 1.4 dark band across top of photos

Hi, just had a strange situation where after turning on the camera and shooting in bright sunlight and then also indoors, my pictures are recording with a dark band from top to bottom, almost like the shutter has not fully opened/closed correctly. Using a Canon R5 and Sigma Art 50mm 1.4 plus adaptor control ring. The lens is in excellent condition but hasn't been used for a while until the other day when I did an outdoor shoot of 400 picture without issue.

Today, however, this problem happened, and nothing regarding shutter speed or aperture changing would correct the problem. After 36 picture of the same result I turned the camera off and on again and the problem looks to have gone away. Just a bit concerned and wondered if anyone might be able to throw some light on this.

Many thanks in advance, Lee.

Pics included here, the last one being very extreme. 096A3127.jpg096A3131.jpg096A3134.jpg096A3144.jpg

If that is in daylight, then the shutter is broken.

The fault seems to be intermittent, and would the camera be showing a fault code if the shutter was broken?

artyman,

Have you tried a different lens and no adapter control ring? Are the results the same?

Steve Thomas

I've changed lenses to a 100-400 MKII and again occasional issues. I don't have an RF lens but plenty of EF glass. The mechanical shutter sounds okay and without the lens on operates and doesn't look to have any damage. The camera is only 6 months old and doesn't have a massive shutter count. Potentially I guess the adaptor may be at fault? (This was also new, purchased at the same time as the camera)

My 30D doesn't show any error code, but the shutter failure on that camera is only visible at short shutter speeds.

The adapter and the aperture in the lens will not produce straight lines. The mirror, focus screen and a shutter will, and your R5 doesn't have a mirror or a focus screen.

Would you be good enough to explain your reply about not producing straight lines and also about shutter failure only being visible at short shutter speeds, please.

My 30D gives me the classic arc pattern. Light leak somewhere in the shutter.

About the straight lines you have how it looks like here https://youtu.be/ptfSW4eW25g?si=-6Bzgk_MuBAgtFNB

You still have warranty after 6 months.

Have you tested the camera outside, away from flickering, artificial light sources?
