Hi -- I'm trying to update my firmware on my 5D. I download the file appropriate for my mac, put it on an SD card, stick the card into the camera. But it's not recognizing the software on the card. When I open the file on my computer, it doesn't seem to have anything other than PDFs. What am I doing wrong?

After you download the file from the website you need to open the folder and copy the .fir file to the root directory of the SD card.
The PDFs you see are the instructions. Good idea to read and understand thoroughly before you start; bad things can happen if you press buttons or lose power for camera.

I agree with John...
You should open that folder marked "update-procedure" and read the PDF thoroughly, follow the instructions exactly.
It is not hard to update firmware... But it's also not hard to screw up and that can mean having to send the camera in for service, to get it working again.
