Please help, not sure what changed in my manual photo setting but my photos are turning out soft / blurry when zoomed in. It was not this way before. Here are some pics and settings of the photos 😞
The birds were not that far from me, it was a cloudy day.

@Samatha,
Your ISO is 16,000, shutter speed 1/4000
This is going to introduce serious noise, grain, etc.
What I recommend is reading about the "exposure triangle"

For stationary subjects with IS turned on you could most likely use a shutter speed of 1/1000, maybe even 1/500. That would get you down to an ISO of 4000 or less.

Are you sure that you're using the EF 100-400mm F/4.5-5.6L IS USM lens lineup. The EXIF data reports that the RF 100-400mm F/5.6-8 IS USM lens was used. So can you confirm what lens was used. Also was IS turned on the lens. I noticed that you used ISO 1600, F/8 and 1/4000th sec shutter speed were used for both pictures.

Yes its the RF 100-400 Mm f/5.6-8 IS USm lens - sorry i am a newbie on all this. What does IS turned on mean? i do think my ISo is high - i noticed that before when i took some still of birds it was very low shutter speed and low iso with great clarity again if i do not overly crop. See below

IS stands for (Image Stabilization) your lens has image stabilization. If you're shooting handheld the IS switch on the lens should be in the "ON" position. Some EOS R Series cameras such as the R6 Mark II & R7 have what's called IBIS (In Body Image Stabilization). This works in tandem with lens IS to provide more image stabilization. Canon provides free online manuals for their cameras and lenses on their website. Below I have more info on Canon's naming conventions. Link to Lens Manual Link to Camera Manual

thanks for all that information..
yes the IS is on - AS button is turned on. I was not using a tripod. Would yoy agree that the issue with the pictures is the ISO?

@Demetrius, this all looks like great information! Did you put this together from your personal knowledge, or is it from another source?
03-10-2024 01:03 PM
@Stephen I put all of it together. I put it in in a Google Doc so I can copy and paste it into the forum. The lens compatibility chart I made in Google Sheets and took a screenshot of it. So it would be easy to upload in the forum. The naming conventions list is always being being updated when new features are released.

Your posted images seem to have been severely cropped. The resolution of the longest edge is only 999 pixels.
Are the images that you posted cropped (zoomed in) from larger images? If so, can you post the larger images here or share them on a service like Dropbox, OneDrive, Google drive, etc?
Did you copy the images from the camera to a smart phone? Some smart phone devices will automatically reduce the size and resolution of imported images on their own.

yes it is cropped and both were from phone to lightroom to computer...but the download to phone was as raw from the cannon app. I did just buy a direct laptop to memory card transfer which should help preserve any resolution changes. I do think a lot of it was the ISO due to me upping the shutter speed on stationary birds as mentioned below.
This was btw the non cropped pic or edited
