I'm looking to get an EOS Rebel T7 DSLR camera, but I'm also looking to get a 17-40mm Ultra wide-angle lens, but the only Canon lens I can find specifically says it's for SLR cameras. Does that mean it won't work for a Rebel T7 camera?

You are absolutely right Ernie about having to go second-hand or refurbished for these lenses. That is now a fact of life for more and more EF and EF-S lenses, since Canon is no longer making a lot of them.
Canon DO have an annoying habit of providing lens hoods for only their L lenses. Still, one can get a third-party hood from on-line sources - you haven't got much risk with a piece of plastic. I totally agree with you about getting from a reputable source, and preferably one that will provide some sort of warranty - even if it's only a few weeks, so you can test the lens and make sure it's up to the advertised condition.
I have bought my 10-22, and 15-85's and a couple of 18-135's used and so far had no issues. L lenses are built like tanks, so unless one has been mistreated ( and there are usually signs of that), then the risk should be a bit reduced.
One day, when I depart this mortal coil, someone is going to get a lot of used, but immaculate camera gear - I am absolutely fastidious about looking after it, and all my gear is still kept in its original packaging and stored in an environmentally-controlled room. Still, I hope that time is a while off yet...

When I was doing my lens testing phase (going through as Miss Liz says 😁), some 50 or 60 lenses, the "used" lenses I sold on, at half price, were in mint condition. They were exactly as they came from the manufacturer. All papers and all accessories and box with packaging complete as delivered. However the ones that stayed, found a home, look used because I use them! Nothing is mistreated really but it isn't babied either. They do what I want or they don't. No in between!

Perhaps a bit more simple to understand is the lens will have "EF" or "EF-S" in its name. I.E., EF 17-40mm f/4L USM Lens. Or, EF-S 17-55mm f/2.8 IS USM Lens. BTW, the latter is a far better choice for your T7 and nearly the same price.
While Canon manufactured lenses will say EF or EF-S on the lens many compatible third-party lenses will not.

Oh, so true, JH and most, if not all, will not say it. But in Canonland it is valid.
