I purchased a PIXMA TS9120 in April, 2018. We haven't used a ream of paper yet, but I'm on my 3rd PGI-280 - XXL black ink cartridge and it's almost empty. The main source of printing is web recipes from my wife and an occasional copy of a document. Maybe if I were printing solid black pages I would expect to get about 120 - 150 pages from the XXL cartridge.
I haven't found a setting to turn down the satuation level, is this normal for this printer? I've gone through two official Cannon cartridges, the current one is an off brand, but if this is normal, even using 3rd party ink, I can't afford to keep this printer.

I have no personal experience with this specific model but I've owned a couple of Canon printers over the years. I think your printer will be similar enough in operation to make it worth giving this a try.
In the printer's driver settings look for a "print quality" button that says something like "Draft" or "Quick Print" and tick the check-box or button next to it. These settings reduce the ink saturation and will print quicker as well, yet should still give you a perfectly readable print.
Also make sure that your paper type selection is "plain paper" and not one of the photo paper settings.
