Canon Pixma MX490 powers on and goes through initialization, then powers back off. Keeps repeating the process as long as it's plugged in. Buttons are non-responsive.

If I have to buy another one, I guarantee it will not be made by Canon.

Same problem with my MG6620. I bought an HP. Need to move on with my life and get stuff done. I've had 4 Canon PIXMA printers now, but never again. Fix this Canon!

I am also having same issue. not able to print anything.

Have printed both your sets of instructions. Printer is functioning, but I have to leave it on after doing MY fix. So this does NOT affect wireless to my printer? If so, back to my method at which point I have to undo your procedure first. Not sure if I want to try it...but at least I believe I understand you...it's not a "real" IP address...but how does that not mess up wireless printing? Right, "web service setup" is the key and we're disabling web service to the printer, in effect, but not wireless printing, a function of our router and wireless network, correct? Just trying to get it.

I've been having the same problem. Today I read through these comments and tried the trouble shooting options.
I unplugged my printer pressed the power button 10x. I also unplugged my internet/router box. I plugged my printer back in first and it came on and stayed on. I then plugged my internet/router back in and with in 5 minutes of connection my printer started cycling on and off again. I pressed the ok button for the heck of it at least 5x and then left it alone for a while. When I came back the printer display screen said about a firmware update and said to press ok. So I did and since then it's been working (about 30mins now)

Am about to try the DNS fix thing that's been posted here, but as a fix also to allow you to print, but not the best as it requires you leave printer ON forever, or go thru procedure again is this:
MY FIX (taken from another member) Power printer off or while off while cycling, then unplug it. Then unplug router. Then press power button 10 times. Plug printer back in. Plug router back in. Printer should have come on. It will "index" a few times and complain, but then it will be ready. Usually, the first printing, it will do the same, but WAIT, it will print. THEN LEAVE THE THING ON, PERIOD! and it will do what you ask (did a new cartridge AND an alignment, and a firmware update). And has printed every time. Had to go back to this solution after trying Canon's lame, useless fix that doesn't work. I know leaving them on is not good, but at least it works.

But have you turned printer off and then back on again? Almost guarantee it will start cycling again. It seems whatever one can do to get the thing to work for however how long (mine has been DAYS) get UNDONE if you turn it off then back on. Except for perhaps the "fix the DNS" solution that has been posted here. And if I understand THAT correctly (not sure if I do) it will disable the printer's web services connection, if that matters to you.

I’ll try to explain. Once your pronter is connected to your wireless network it automatically gets an IP address, and is reachable inside you netwrok for wireless printing from other devices.
The DNS address which you set up as a fake one is used for the printer to access the “outside world”. The DNS server translates website names to their internet address (for example “www.canon.com” needs to be translated to some IP address) With the fake DNS server IP it is unable to contact the outside world, and so the reboot doesn’t occur. It is still not clear why the reboot happens with a real DNS server address, but it is clear that this workaround works.
hope that helps

Canon wants us to buy new, upgraded more expensive printers

This works, thanks Polls22!
1. Unplug your printer from the outlet (it'll now be powered off)
2. Go to the modem in your house for your cable and internet. Disconnect all of the cords and let it sit for a couple minutes.
3. Go plus the printer back in and it'll start up without the cycling (problem isn't solved yet) which will allow you to then access the Menu on the printer. Then go to Setup menu > Web service setup > DNS server setup > Manual setup. Configure an IP from your internal network that is not in use or another IP that is not a DNS server, as the printer will not be able to make queries. Choose a random IP number. I just made up a random one using this format192.158.1.38 (hell use that number if you want). Once configured, press OK. Select the 'No' option and press OK. Wait a few moments to complete the configuration.
4. Go and plug back in all the wires on your cable/internet modem. Once that connection is restored the printer will work.
