Canon Pixma MX490 powers on and goes through initialization, then powers back off. Keeps repeating the process as long as it's plugged in. Buttons are non-responsive.

No need to buy a new one yet.
Look at Polls822 comment for understandable instructions to correct this.

I just tried my printer again. No change, it is still restarting. It would be nice if Canon would at least tell us what is going on. I am aware of the work around procedures, but I would prefer that the root cause would be fixed.

I tried the other "solution" I found, from Canon. I worked through one power off and back on AFTER the procedure and it worked. Then next time I powered it off, then back on after a bit, it went back to cycling on and off again. I let them know, TWICE, that their stupid "fix" does NOT work...and to fix it...NOW! Will give MY FIX AGAIN (sorry for posting numerous times), after the link to THAT useless Canon procedure so you can read it. Not discounting the DNS stuff being posted but too complicated for me.
MY FIX (taken from another member) Power printer off or while off unplug it. Then unplug router. Then press power button 10 times. Plug printer back in. Plug router back in. Printer should have come on. It will "index" a few times and complain, but then it will be ready. Usually, the first printing, it will do the same, but WAIT, it will print. THEN LEAVE THE THING ON, PERIOD! and it will do what you ask (did a new cartridge AND an alignment, and a firmware update). And has printed every time. Had to go back to this solution after trying Canon's lame, useless fix that doesn't work. I know leaving them on is not good, but at least it works.

Did you do the work around posted by Polls822? This worked for me and others also.

How does one find the post by Polls822 without scrolling thru everything? Am new here and the "functions" are a bit confusing to me.

My printer is a Canon Maxify MB2010. This problem that you are experiencing is because of DNS. I solved my problem by turning off the Access Point (or unplugging the internet cable from the router's WAN port). The printer will turn on normally. Then go to Setup menu > Web service setup > DNS server setup > Manual setup. Configure an IP from your internal network that is not in use or another IP that is not a DNS server, as the printer will not be able to make queries. Once configured, press OK. Select the 'No' option and press OK. Wait a few moments to complete the configuration. After returning to the menu, press the 'Home' button on the printer. Turn the Access Point back on or reconnect the Internet cable and retest. For me this solution worked. As I do not use external services (Google Cloud), there is no need for my printer to consult on the Internet. Hope this helps.

Simple procedure but requires you to leave printer ON...period! I know it's not good, but at least the printer works. Tho you can repeat of course 😉
Power printer off or while it's off while cycling, unplug it. Then unplug router. Press power button on printer 10 times. Plug printer back in. Then plug router back in. Printer will whine and complain and "index?" a few times but will stop and will be on/functional. First printing job, it will complain and index again but WAIT...it WILL print. Then it will do what you ask. Did several functions: new cartridge, realignment, firmware update, etc. FINE! And I guess they do "index" when they've been sitting, while on, but there's nothing in the "window/screen", so it's not on full power? So I think next print it will index again. I hate it, while I'm waiting for the print to come out! BUT IT WORKS and has for days until I tried another "fix" from Canon that worked once, then next manual power off and back on and it was back to recycling. But sadly, I don't know of any other printer that has the functions I want, especially printing even after the ink is gone and it's printing nothing. Printer "THINKING", then INSISTING, you need ink then disabling your printer is a game to make you buy more ink! I just want a cheap, simple printer for personal use.

Ok, I'm NOT a techie tho I've done a few things. ?1-setup menu on printer, yes? ?2 IP from internal network not in use (where find or IP not a DNS server?) ?3-Home button on the printer...don't think I have one. No cloud here either and all these "services" do NOT "serve" me except with instant, intense annoyance! Also as in 10 or more annoyance phone calls/day that one CANNOT stop! "Serving" EVIL/criminal.

Okay, the SETUP MENU is on the printer. In order to get the printer to stay on to access the menu you must disconnect you wifi so the printer doesn't continue to interface with it. Once the wifi is off/disconnected, turn the printer ON. It will go thru the usual cycling and stay on. Slide the menu option until you see SETUP MENU. Then follow Web service setup > DNS server setup > Manual setup. The IP/DNS number will appear. I changed the last few numbers from 001 to 101 on my printer. Once changed, press OK. Select the 'No' option and press OK. Turn on your wifi again. If your printer should automatically "find" and connect to your wifi and function normally. Hope this helps.
