PIXMA iP8720 issues printing pink/magenta on photo paper after macOS Tahoe — plain paper works fine

ebw6674

My iP8720 is printing with a heavy pink/magenta cast on any photo paper setting. Blacks come out purple, dark areas are washed out. Plain paper prints perfectly with correct colors.

This is the first time I've printed since upgrading to macOS Tahoe (26). It worked fine before the upgrade.

Troubleshooting completed:

  • Replaced PGBK cartridge (new, genuine Canon)
  • Replaced BK cartridge (genuine Canon)
  • Nozzle check pattern prints perfectly — all channels clean and solid
  • Downloaded and installed fresh driver from Canon website (Sept 2025 version)
  • Reset macOS printing system completely
  • Removed and re-added printer via USB
  • Tested multiple media types in driver: Glossy Photo Paper, Photo Paper Plus Glossy II, Matte Photo Paper
  • Tested from multiple applications (Photos, Preview) — same result
  • Canon Color Matching selected in print dialog

Results:

  • Plain paper + plain paper setting = correct colors
  • Any photo paper setting = severe pink/magenta cast regardless of actual paper used

Is this a known issue with macOS Tahoe? Is there a driver update planned? Any workarounds?

I think you are missing the BK channel.

You seems you have an incorrect color setting somewhere:

Incorrect Color Settings

  • Ensure that your color settings are correct. If both your photo software and printer driver are set to manage colors, it can create a "double color management" issue, resulting in pink prints.
  • Printer Color Settings in macOS Tahoe

    Accessing Printer Settings

To manage printer color settings in macOS Tahoe, follow these steps:

    1. Open System Settings from the Apple menu.
    2. Click on Printers & Scanners in the sidebar.
    3. Select your printer from the list to view its settings.

    Color Management Options

    • Color Profiles: Ensure your printer is using the correct color profile. This can affect how colors are printed.
    • Print as Color Target: If available, this option allows you to print without color management. It may be greyed out if not supported by your printer or driver.

    Troubleshooting Color Issues

If you encounter problems with color printing:

    • Reset the Print System: This can resolve many issues related to color profiles and printer settings.
    • Reinstall Printer Drivers: Ensure you have the latest drivers for your printer, as outdated drivers can cause color management issues.

    Additional Tips

    • Check for updates to macOS Tahoe, as patches may address known color management issues.
    • Use the ColorSync Utility for advanced color management tasks if needed.

I appreciate the response, but I still have a couple of issues. First, I have reset the Print System and reinstalled the drivers per my post. I don't see a Color Profiles option when following your path from Settings to Printers & Scanners, nor is there any mention of Print as Color Target. I have also reviewed all the settings available in the printers utility and have found nothing. I haven't downloaded the Colorsync Utility, but since I've never had a reason to use it, I am wondering why I should now.

Magenta cast sometimes indicates double profiling. Can you post a screenshot of the print dialogue settings indoor photo app?

Thanks for the reply. I included everything I could think of. Let me know if you see an issue that I am not.Screenshot 2026-01-30 at 10.52.00 AM.png

I don’t see anything that would indicate a problem. What happens if you select ColorSync?

I opted for automatic in Colorsync and it yielded the same result. I included a screenshot of what I expect (the darker image) and the print for comparison.

Thanks!

I really hate to ask but do you have the glossy paper loaded in the rear tray, glossy side up?

Seeing this I suggest you run a nozzle check.
