PIXMA TS6420a - Replaced Canon black ink cartridge ERROR 1688

I own a Pixma TS6420a printer.  The black ink ran out.  I bought a new cartridge from Staples.  My printer will not recognize it.  The support error code is 1688.  It says the ink has run out and replace the ink cartridge.  I just did that.  How do I fix this?

Check that there is nothing blocking the contacts on the cartridge.

Sometimes the new cartridge is defective, especially if it is a non-Canon cartridge.

I had purchased from Amazon and it said genuine Canon.  I have had the issue in the past regarding non Canon ink.  I contacted Amazon and they agreed to refund me for the cartridge.  I then went to Staples for the purchase.  If Staples sells Canon cartridges that are not Canon products that is a major problem.  We checked. there is nothing blocking the contacts on the cartridge.  It is brand new.  I took the tape off and inserted it in the printer.

No one said "Staples sells Canon cartridges that are not Canon products". Some folks purchase non_OEM cartridges to save money.

Did you take it back to Staples and ask for a replacement? If so and you still have the problem contact Canon support.

It was the only one in the store yesterday.  Staples stock for my particular printer was very low.  They did not even carry a combo pack.  I needed to print yesterday and did not have time to wait to order directly from Canon.  I will call Canon on Monday.
