PIXMA TS3520 won't print, error message 16

The printer will not print. I have a newPG 275 cartridge inserted, but the color is completely empty as I do not priny in color. I receive the error message 16 indicating out of ink. Will it not print in black and whith without a new color cartridge? Thanks.
