Replaced the black ink cartridge on my PIXMA TR4720, now have constant "door is open" message. Tried disconnecting from power, turned off laptop and reconnected this morning, still have the message so I reset the printer - still have the message!

Since disconnecting the printer from power did not reset it and the error wont clear, the printer will require service.
If the printer is in it's 1 year warranty, I recommend reaching out to Canon support for your warranty options. You will need to register your Canon gear HERE to access additional support options.
