PIXMA TR4520 printing white ink not black ink

I printed a B&W document on my printer, successfully, a couple weeks ago. Yesterday, it said the black ink cartridge needed to be replaced, so I did. I tried FOUR different new cartridges, and I thought they were dud ink cartridges. I did a variety of tests, including restarting the printer a few times, tried the Maintenance cleaning. I discovered it will still print in color. Then I discovered that if I highlighted some text in a color, that when the page is printed I see the color highlight, **and the text is printed in white**. I've checked the settings for the printer, the settings when I press command+P, and everything is set to black and white. I tried changing the Word doc font colors, from black to color, to black to another color, and back to black, and this didn't work either. I tried closing and starting Word. I tried opening an older document (in case something was wonky in the current doc). That didn't work. How do I fix this? I didn't do anything with the printer since the last time it printed properly in B&W, until I tried to print yesterday.

Make sure that the setting for color only has not been toggled on:

Do you have instructions for checking this on a Macbook (I've searched and not found something comparable to the screenshots in that instruction)? I did not view or change any printer settings between the last time I used it successfully and yesterday.

Can anyone help? The link provided was for a PC and I have a Mac. I'd appreciate a resolution so I don't have to buy a new printer.
