Sorry about that. My time expired. Faster this time. I'm including it as the first reply.

Basically I love this printer. Purchased 2007, and it's  had very few issues. I'm running Taho3 26.5.2 on a Mac. Here's what happened yesterday.

Printout was streaked.

Ran Nozzle Check 1. Black too light.

Did clean #1. Nozzle check still showed black too light.

Did clean #2. Nozzle check 3 was good. Black ok.

Did a second print, and it was streaked again.

Did clean #3. Print was perfect.

Printed a second time, and it was streaked again.

Tried to run a deep clean, and it stalled.

Tried again. Clean stalled again.

Printer beeped, showed yellow triangle warning light, Printer Error Occurred, Support Code: 5B00.

Manual says “Contact your nearest Canon service center to request a repair.”

Does anyone know what to do without spending a lot of money?

A good long age for a printer is ten years, after that the moving parts start to slow and many troubles start to appear.  Yours is at eighteen years. the support code your printer has is the ink absorbers will shortly be full and the printer will come to a stop. This is a problem in addition to the print head streaking.

The GX2020 appears to be an excellent choice, one of the few printers that works with dual band WIFI routers and has fax capabilities.

Derrick, thanks for your reply. You're exactly right. I contacted Canon customer service and spoke to a real person. He was helpful, experienced, and everything you want a good CS rep to be. He also suspected the ink absorber, so I decided on  a GX2020. My history with Canon customer service and equipment has been exceptional, so I'm looking forward to another satisfying experience ahead.
