Canon Pixma IP8720 suddenly stopped working 5100 Error

I purchased this printer in 2019. Everything worked fine. I printed yesterday with no issues, and I am suddenly getting a 5100 ERROR today. I upgraded my MAC OS operating systems recently but everything worked after the updates. There were no issues that would suggest this printer is at its end of life. I read about an upgrade program. Why is there no online form to submit for the upgrade program? Reading similar posts, a 19.99 support call gives no solution to a problem and the Canon online FAQ, Knowledge base, etc are about clicking links that lead you to no real solutions to a problem. Does anyone have a similar issue or an answer? Is there another brand that you would recommend?

Hi art021,

The 5100 can be caused by a paper jam.  Please use the links below to clear possible paper jams:

The 5100 error can also be caused when the encoder/timing strip inside your PIXMA iP8720 is smudged.

To clean the encoder/timing strip, please follow the steps in this Knowledgebase Article:

If the 5100 error still persists, your PIXMA iP8720 would require service.  You are eligible for Canon's Upgrade Program. This is for out of warranty units which have been diagnosed to require service. This option allows you a one-time opportunity to purchase a replacement product, discounted from the list price.
