I downloaded the new EOS Utility 3.17.0 and then the new firmware update, EOS Rebel T7 / 1500D / 2000D Firmware Update, Version 1.2.0 to my Windows 11 laptop this evening. Whenever I try to update the firmware with EOS Utility, I get an error message on window 5/5 that the "connection was lost" and EOS Utility closes. I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling to no avail. Granted, I haven't been "computer-savvy" since the early 2010s, and there might be something I'm missing. Please extend any and all advice!

Greetings,
The firmware download comes with detailed instructions. Please review them to ensure you are not missing any steps. The .zip file has to be extracted and the firmware (.fir) file has to be copied to the root of a full size, formatted in camera, memory card.
Using a card reader is the best method. It removes points of failure and is extremely reliable.

Thank you so much for your response, shadowsports! I didn't miss any steps and extracted the .fir properly, I'm just having issues with EOS Utility maintaining connection to my camera. I guess I need to go buy card reader?

Greetings bettycrocker,
As long as the FIR file is extracted from the download file from the product support page for the EOS Rebel T7 camera, then let's check the connection between the camera and the computer. Check to ensure that the camera's Wi-Fi function is disabled prior to connecting the USB cable to the computer. Leaving it enabled will disable the USB port on the camera. Please ensure that there is a memory card inside the camera as well.
Test a different cable and a different USB port on the computer. Check to ensure that there are no other applications that are trying to communicate with the camera while the camera is connected to the computer. You may also check any security setting or security software that may be interrupting the communication between the camera and the computer.
If the issue persists, then we recommend on loading the FIR file onto the root directory of the SD card through a card read and inserting the card back onto the camera to update the camera's firmware.
