Greetings,
Pixel shift has come to the R5 in FW version 1.8.1.
I had a chance to check this out myself and the detail is awesome. Pixel shift is not for everyone. as the files can be rather large. If you want to see it for yourself, install v1.8.1 and grab the latest version of DPP.

I don't understand this part:
*Use EOS Utility/Digital Photo Professional to check the images. EOS Utility/Digital Photo Professional will need to be upgraded.
What needs to be checked in the images? And, what is Digital Photo Professional?

Digital Photo Professional (DPP 4) is Canons free Raw image editor. You can edit JPeG's as well, but it's kind of weak for jpg, IMHO.
In the past, Canon has added features that required DPP 4 to open/edit them, like dual pixel Raw for example. DP Raw was introduced on the 5D mark IV, BTW. Canons version of Pixel Shift may be another of those features that only DPP 4 can handle. Pixel Shift has been around for a bit and Canon is a little late to the game 🙂

Thank for the quick response FloridaDrafter. However, I am still not clear what the need is for it. I've never used it before but use both Lightroom Classic and Photoshop. Am I to understand that the new feature in the latest R5 firmware can only be used with EOS Utility/Digital Photo Professional?

That is a strong possibility. It took quite a while for Adobe to be able use the dual pixel Raw files that I mentioned earlier, if they did at all. Canon likes to hang on to some of their tech, or so it seems. I can only find references to LR using them in 2021, and that statement from Adobe was about converting to DNG. Not being a user of LR, I can't verify that. I do use dual pixel Raw however, and DPP 4 to process.
DPP 4 is a nice program and is all I use for my Raw editing. It has lots of tools specifically for editing Canon Raw files and their features. A lot of folks use it to process Canon Raw, then export to Adobe PS via the PS export function in DPP 4.

I just did took test shots and turns out the high res files are JPeG, so you can open them in whatever program you want... Provided it will handle a 400MP file of 150-200MB's in size 🙂 My favorite program on my modest laptop threw up a memory warning, but opened the file anyway, LOL!

There is a bunch of testing happening on the CR website. Many have expressed a desire for a raw file format. My body doesn't have ibis so it's not something that I've been able to test myself. I have viewed several samples uploaded by others

I just checked again. As someone said elsewhere, 1.8.1 doesn't show up at the top of the list (at least on my default order of Recommended). You can either scroll down and find updates to DPP, the firmware and EOS Utility associated w/1.8.1. Or you can manually sort by most recent and it pops to the top.
