Canon DPP only works with WIFI OFF on Asus ProArt PX13, Windows 11

AMD Ryzen AI 9 XY 370 with Radeon 890M and NVidea RTX 4050.  Would like suggestions on how to get Canon support.  Please do not bother with the following suggestions as I've tried them all multiple times:

1) Updates - OS, WIFI or graphics Drivers, DPP, Uninstall and removed all of the potentially corrupted config files for a clean install of DPP - done all of that several times

2) Change memory usage for DPP, GPUs, etc.  Everything is set for highest performance and background updates of the SW are allowed max bandwidth, etc.  Done several memory tweaks to ensure ample memory is available.

3) DID change prefs on DPP to ensure that "last folder" was no longer selected (it was a NAS) and default folders are on the SSD (c: drive).

DPP works fine with WIFI off, spins endlessly as soon as WIFI is turned on on and maxes out the bandwidth looking for....???  DPP won't start (endless spinning) with WIFI on.  Stats normally with it off.  Seems like a "smoking gun" that some DPP developer or guru might have run upon before.  I will try a full removal of files an clean install once again and see if the file locations are still on the NAS - if that's the case I might have missed a preferences file somewhere.

Getting to my wits end and thought someone here might have a clue - just a hobbyist, so not any REAL urgency.  Just wish I hadn't updated my DPP to the latest version, and/or performed the system update, and it was working fine before and not now.  Updating is not always the right answer it seems!

That sounds like an oddball software interaction probably not directly related to an actual function of DPP or the WiFi driver.  I ran into a different storage issue related to HP's annoying "Wolf" security system that prevented the large 12 TB drives in my system from starting properly while the four 2 TB NVMI drives on the processor bus had no issue.  It was a conflict not directly tied to any function but just bad coding.

If you have Microsoft's stupid "one drive" cloud system enabled, I would try disabling that and seeing if the issue goes away.  Modern microsoft very aggressively tries to insert itself into areas where it isn't wanted/needed and in one update of Windows 10 the update re-enabled Onedrive and then wouldn't allow one of my other apps to start properly.

I assume when you checked all of your default locations that you also made sure that the temporary files location is also on a local instead of network drive?

Good luck, these are the worst issues because each company will simply point fingers at the other and you have apps, drivers, bios, etc. involved in this issue.

Thanks!  OneDrive is disabled, and yes, I used only local storage for the DPP temp files.  For now I'm using a) the workaround and b) another laptop where DPP behaves normally (Dell Alienware x14 R2).  The Asus ProArt is a bit more portable and designed for art, supposedly.  I guess that depends upon what art and what tools?  I was hoping to use it for travelling and end of day DPP photo processing, but hadn't done all of my homework it seems.  The dual graphics processors and the way that the NVidia is handled with the screen and USB-C ports controlled by the weaker on-board AMD graphics is a weird configuration IMO. The only way to use the NVidia is the HDMI port, so you really cannot even take full advantage of the graphics capabilities (g-sync, for instance).  Asus SAYS it is "supported" but that doesn't mean it's really usable I suppose 🙂  Or, at least that's the way it seems to me.  Just had a repair done on the Alienware, so perhaps I'll get motivated soon to do a rebuild of the factory OS on the Asus.  Just have other priorities right now.

Sort of a lengthy update and still not a solution, but at least working offline is a workaround.  With a new Canon photo printer on the way I was wanting DPP to work while connected to the network.  Bottom line up front - I think this some sort of file "hook" that isn't letting go and causing the hang - sort of similar to https://community.usa.canon.com/t5/Camera-Software/DPP4-Digital-Photo-Professional-hangs-for-about-t....  Recording attempts below in case someone else runs into this and is looking for things to try.  Things that I did - none worked:

Used paid-for CCleaner - nice product.  Cleaned up files, updated everything, deleted a lot

Used free (trial) Revo Pro Uninstaller - Uninstalled all thing Asus and Canon.  Note:  Still had to manually remove the user local and remote C:\Users\username\AppData\Roaming\Canon_Inc_IC and C:\Users\username\AppData\local\Canon_Inc_IC folders.  Otherwise it would open to the last open folder - so some user data was still there.  Also, my camera information was still in the registry for EOS Utility - didn't think that would affect DPP so I left it in there.

Reset, cleared and and troubleshot BITS (Background Intelligent Transfer Service) as apps as well as Windows Update use that service for moving data in the background.  I had high hopes that might fix it.  BITS was the smoking gun, and it may yet prove to be so as the troubleshooter really never runs cleanly.  It suggests some security settings need tweaking them says nothing is wrong when it goes to tweak them.  I've reset and cleared it from the command line, so I may look more into that later.

Rebooted after ever deletion.  LOTS of rebooting and network resets.

Deleted all network devices in the Device Manager then reboot to let them come back hoping something might clear.

Did clean installs for DPP versions 4.17.0, 4.20.11 and 4.21.10 - same results for all of them.

Tried wired Ethernet.

Turned off the firewall.

Looked through the system logs and tracked down all alerts.  No alerts or errors (other than "Hung App") were generated by DPP.

While I was wired to the router I did notice my primary NAS in my private cloud had a noisy drive while DPP was trying to start (again, BITS might be at play there).  WD SMART data wasn't bad, but it's time to replace those drives so I'll do that next week - maybe something magical will happen.

I'm sure it would take less time to just go back to factory OS and install all new SW, but I've learned a thing or two today that I didn't know before.  And I do enjoy learning and trying to solve a tough problem.  I'll get the new RAID NAS installed and ensure that the backups are still happening and then if I haven't gotten it by my Christmas break I'll bite the bullet and start with a fresh factory reset laptop.

I have confidence that there will be a solution at some point.  For now the workaround isn't the end of the world - I don't need this to work or lose thousands of dollars in business.

I also uninstalled OneDrive and MS Xbox stuff that I will never use.

Greetings,

One last thought that may or may not apply.

Do you have one or more mapped drives present?

Yes.  I have thought of that, and that's why I was trying to clear the BITS cache.  I will try unmapping and then remapping to see if that clears the "hang" sometime.  I suspect the "hang" up may be associated with DPP reaching out to the mapped drives.  I use mapped drives for several directories and DPP is the only SW ever to have an issue with it.  (Well, I had one other app complain, but I ignored the complaint during install and it has been working fine for about 10 years now).  I am unlikely to change drive mapping arrangement permanently just to accommodate DPP.  I always edit with DPP locally, though, copying folders to the desktop and then saving them off to those directories.  Those copied filed DO retain the DPP changes that I save, btw.  But something changed along the way as this was always my configuration.

Millions of computers at offices use this very same model, and many use wholly virtual desktops and some have less bandwidth than I do here.  The company that I work for has thousands of employees using an thick client virtual desktop model, with many using a VPN to connect from their homes or hotels.   I keep all Windows and apps local to their c: directories and not virtual/mapped.  What's baffling is that we're not talking about something new for DPP.  I've been using it that way for years now, as well, and well aware of how ill-advised it is to actually edit files that aren't local.  I have done so successfully in the pat, but there were certainly issues with performance.  That's why I went to copying to the desktop.  I also used this model to put together an hour long video of my son's wedding, btw.   But perhaps I touched something on a NAS I shouldn't have and DPP is stuck trying to read or write some enormous files via BITS.  That's why I tried to clear both the BITS cache and do a really purely clean DPP install.  DPP is certainly not hindered in performance when disconnected from the network.

The other thing I'll try first is kicking DPP off and letting it sit overnight and see what happens.  It could be that I just haven't let it sit long enough for it to complete that action.  I DO tend to get impatient when the blue circle goes round and round for 30 minutes 🙂

And, funny thing, I had already decided to just let it sit for hours and hours on end to see what happens before I read your note.  It DID open DPP and is stuck on the "Intro" message where you can set up preferences and/or click "do not show this message again".  I'm hoping my click on "Close" will "take" and the app will simmer all night and I'll wake up to a December miracle 🙂  We'll see!

Bottom line - It works if I unplug the NAS drives.  It works if I OS disconnect the mapped drives.  And, even more specifically and usefully for me, it works if I change the "Pictures" path back to the default from the mapped drive.  There's a zombie process that's thrashing the Pictures folder.  I wouldn't tag this as a SOLUTION just yet, but a very livable workaround.  Changing that path and back is a minute or less.

I wanted to blame Microsoft as the 25H2 patch was installed about the same time I had the trouble start up.   So I did a repair install on 25H2.  That had no effect.  Of course, I still want to blame Microsoft 🙂

I am trouble-shooting a) for anyone else who might run into this rather bizarre scenario and b) to maybe help the Canon DPP developers should I really figure this out.  I keep getting more bread crumbs, and I have a workaround now that's not hard to implement at all and keeps the WIFI on so that I can transition from DPP to Professional Print and Layout Software now that I have a printer coming (yippee!! - merry Christmas to me!)

Just FYI, recall that a) DPP used to work (from May to October) and now has an issue and b) it still works just fine on mapped drives on my Alienware laptop.  So it's likely not my network, or the mapped drives per se.  And I don't see how it could be the Asus HW when it used to work (unless something broke and I don't know it yet, of course)

I'm still wondering what is "non-compliant" about my system. Did we ever nail that down?  I'm guessing Canon would really want to support the Asus Creator series.  Is it the ASUS-installed Win 11 Home that has all of the Windows Updates (not "upgrades" as I misstated once - my bad on that) applied, or that DPP isn't supported on AMD processors?

Still holding the "nuclear" whole OS reinstall till Christmas break.  Then, apply updates to get system up to date and start installing SW.  DPP would be first and once verified as working I'd add one title at a time and check to see if it still works.  Or not.  Changing the Pictures folder path can just become a part of my workflow.

Great.  Then I have identified your issue.  😉  We've seen issues similar to this in the past.  How you resolve it may take some creativity or an adjusted workflow.
