VIXIA HF G60 Recording Sound Issues

johnweik

The recording quality is terrible with this camcorder so far after a year of using it. It is not the microphone at all as I have used numerous external mics and all are the same. The zoom motor adds a lot of noise to recordings as well as some low light situations, cold weather situations, and almost any uneven light in the woods. these noises are not being recorded with any of the mics, they are being added to the recordings even with all microphones turned off. Still the same? The zoom transfers a lot of noise when used and again, not coming through the mic as it is turned off and the sound is just as bad with the mic turned on? Is this normal or is something wrong with this camera? Never have had this issue with lower end cannon camcorders. Way to much noise to constantly be attempting to edit it all out in post. Help! Great picture quality, but crazy loud noise issues!

Hi johnweik,

When an external microphone is turned off the VIXIA HF G60 will switch to recording audio through the built in microphone. That microphone is near the lens and it can pick up sound when the lens zoom or focus is adjusting. Sometimes external microphones mounted on the camera can also pick up sounds from the lens. There is a note about that on page 71 of the manual.

To limit sounds from the lens we would recommend using a microphone that is not mounted on the camera. So if you are recording a person speaking to camera we would recommend using something like a lapel mic or a hand held mic. We do not make those types of microphones through Canon, so there aren't specific ones we could recommend through Canon support.

Well, if it is switched off and still plugged in the camera mic does not work either. No sound being picked up at all externally. Still the camera is adding many different sounds to the film though. Not just the zoom motor feed back but many other camera noises way beyond normal.....

Hi johnweik,

If the camera is recording sound even when microphones are turned off that is a sign there is an issue with the camera. If no microphone is turned on the camera shouldn't be recording any sound.
